Subsonic Can't See Music Files After MacOS Monterey Install

Postby vigotone » Thu Oct 28, 2021 4:13 pm

Just installed Monterey, and Subsonic isn't seeing my music files. The path to the files has not changed (still on an external HD). Permissions all seem fine. But after installing the new OS, there is literally nothing in my Subsonic library. I've tried re-scanning media folders, but it doesn't register any music files.

The path to my music files is this:

/Volumes/Music Library HD/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music

I don't use Subsonic for video, but strangely when I expand the path to /Volumes/Music Library HD/iTunes/iTunes Media, it DOES see the contents of the Movies folder, but not Music.

What can I do? I've tried deleting and re-adding the Media Folder, but it's no use. Other apps (JRiver, iTunes) all access the Media Folder just fine.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have no help for you but am very interested. I hope you get it working and report back no matter what. I keep using Subsonic, just paid for another year. But considering the lack of development nor any apparent interest from developer I fully expect it to break at some point. To That end I have Emby set up and it will suffice if need be. But I prefer Subsonic.

Good luck!

I got it to work! Not sure how. I deleted the Media Folder, added a test Media Folder on my local HD, which did not work. But when I deleted that and re-added my proper Media Folder, it went ahead and scanned all 140,000 music files. Phew!

A pretty lateral move off of Subsonic would be to Airsonic Advanced https://github.com/airsonic-advanced/airsonic-advanced - It is in active development with frequent snapshot updates https://github.com/airsonic-advanced/airsonic-advanced/releases. You retain DLNA, Sonos, and API support as with Subsonic.

If you're looking for a more modern solution, you can also check out Navidrome https://www.navidrome.org/ . The primary focus at the moment for Navidrome seems to be a much better back-end, and continued support of the Subsonic API. There is a rudimentary UI with a much more metadata-approach to your library as well as a much better search, and it is compatible with any Subsonic API apps insofar as audio content (video is not implemented at this time). They do not provide DLNA or Sonos support at this time.

I hear ya - although as a quick aside, both have stand-alone "installation" options, Navidrome literally just launching the executable, and Airsonic Advanced just a quick command line to the java runtime - you can be up and running in less than 5 minutes. Best of luck to ya.

Been a while. Guess I'll take (yet) another look.

Navidrome is pretty simple to set up, and I've been working to keep my SubFire clients compatible with it. It hasn't taken over as my primary service because it only supports ID3 organization (even asking for the musicDirectory endpoints returns things as if they were on the filesystem as artist/album/song. suitable for most collections, indeed. but not mine. :)
