You can run any OS as a server, just add some extra big drives and share them, backup your local PC's to that drive.
I run windows 2000 on one, 2003 on another and linux on a third.

True. But if you have Windows on your laptops/desktops on your network you also get automated backups of you attached PC's.

I use a WHSv1 server as my primary library that runs Synctoy at 2AM to copy any changes to a RAID array that is a mirror of the library. That runs on WHS 2011 and also does the daily workstation/laptop backups. After the libraries are synced Subsonic does the 3am scans and updates all the instances that access the RAID array.

If i only had the option of a single server for running Subsonic, theres not doubt that $50 for WHS 2011 is a steal as it runs on Win 2008R2 code base and can be used for all sorts of applications in addition to the back up features, such as remote access to your home PC's over internet. That alone has been a lifesaver for us on more than one occasion. Because it is an RSA encrypted link we've used it inside several "secure" network environments that think they don't allow anyone to do remote access from within their networks. Add a seperate hard drive just to back up your media files and your in pretty good shape for not losing you data barring theft or fire.

There are so many things you can do with WHS2011 that it's a no brainer for $50. It'l run on just about any old hardware that you build very cheaply and add extra hard drives later. I took a $50 Antec 300 case, WHS 2011 and an old HP 65W quad core CPU and then just kept adding hard drives a few at a time. You can get up and running for a couple hundred bucks if you've got some old hardware laying around.

Compare the price, power, and flexibility of a setup like that with what some guys are trying to do with an expensive NAS or other similar overpriced underpowered gear that turns into a nightmare to use for Subsonic.

Fyi, subsonic was still messed up, so I restored the entire c:\subsonic directory, then rescan media folders. That fixed it.

I had a similar problem when upgrading, running on Fedora 17. Did a yum remove subsonic, then yum install subsonic, and did a manual restart of the subsonic service, then it started working.

Had to repeat the steps above when I upgraded to the Mashup 4.7 version, but then ran into some other errors, which resulted in having to completely remove the /var/subsonic folder after doing an uninstall, then reinstalling the Mashup. I did lose usernames and passwords, but it was OK for me, as I only had the admin user, my own account (non-admin), my wife's account, and a couple test accounts. And I have backups of them in a MySQL database.

I just need to re-enable the registration engine, but I am trying to integrate with Facebook Login, which is becoming more of a PITA (pain in the rear) than I thought...
