Thanks for helping me learn a couple of new words :) (I'm not a native speaker as you've probably noticed)

I guess I'm just very picky about phrasings that doesn't mean anything to the rest of the world. But that's because I'm a developer and details make all the difference for us. If it is repeated often enough that Java is this or that, it eventually becomes the truth. Even though the problem here probably comes from code written by the Spring framework developers a long time ago. To me, it is a bit unfair to blame that on the Java devs.. but anyway. In this case, the user wasn't even sure which Java version was running so it's most probably a good idea to go through the setup and make sure the Java install is up-to-date.

I will strip everything out and reinstall again. Is it preferred to use a domain account or is there an issue with the local system account running the Subsonic service? The only thing I'd like to avoid doing is making the ID it runs under an administrator on the machine. I've been a systems administrator in Windowsland for nearly 20 years and there are some things you just simply try to avoid.

The local account is fine if you can access the music storage as X:\Music.

Otherwise if you access the music on a network share \\Servername\Music then you might need to use an account authorized to access the share as the credential for the service account. This might not be required if the share is on the loacl machine, but I'm not certain of that. If the share is on another machine it definitely needs logon creds.

Assuming that you are the admin, you probably also use another account name with admin privleges that should work fine. You could probably set up another username/password that will work as long as the server recognizes the credentials and the share allows the account access permissions.

Some trial and error might be needed to get it right.

Just an update here...a remove of everything and a reinstall of everything with Java 1.7 got things up and running. My first go around must have been a fluke.
