From the stack trace from the only log file i saw in this thread it looks like there was a problem in the xml for the applicationContext-sonos.xml file, was that file corrupted somehow or edited?

After trying the solutions above (and those mentioned in my post previous to yours) and still receiving the 503, I completely uninstalled and started from scratch yesterday. So far all is working as expected. It's certainly not an ideal solution, but apparently in this case it was the *only* solution. I do wish there was another viable means for streaming one's own music collection, but having found none, I may just have to live with starting from square one every couple of months.

When you uninstall everything, what do you lose? Is "recently added" still in order or does everything look like it was added at the same time?

Also: what exactly do you uninstall and how?

I'm convinced that this error has to do with java upgrades breaking something that jetty relies on. It isn't just a subsonic problem as people are complaining about it on madsonic and airsonic forums.

Also, I had the problem, completely uninstalled subsonic including the entire /var/subsonic directory, then did a new install and still had the problem.

These lines from the log are telling:

Code: Select all
368 [main] WARN org.mortbay.log - Failed startup of context org.mortbay.jetty.webapp.WebAppContext@43496793{/,jar:file:/usr/share/subsonic/subsonic.war!/}
java.util.zip.ZipException: error in opening zip file

The only relevant .zip file I've found is in /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64 and it's a broken symlink called src.zip. I surmise that something broke that link. There is an actual file called src.zip but it's in /opt/jdk1.8.0_161/ but I'm not going to fix the broken symlink to link to it for fear that it'd break all kinds of stuff.

Has anyone tried completely removing java (see here) and reinstalling?

I've now done this and it solved the problem. My steps under Ubuntu 14.04.5 (ymmv):

1. Back up /var/subsonic (I did this days ago at the moment I knew subsonic wasn't working anymore).
2. Stop subsonic if it's running: sudo service subsonic stop (in my case)
3. Totally delete subsonic: sudo dpkg -P subsonic
4. Delete /var/subsonic: sudo rm -R /var/subsonic
5. Totally remove all versions of java (only acceptable if you're not dependent on a specific version of java other than 7 for other software you use) following this procedure.
6. Reinstall java 7: sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre
7. Download subsonic and install it with: sudo dpkg -i subsonic-6.1.3.deb
8. Since I've always run subsonic as it's own user (called "subsonic") and because I forgot to preserve ownership when I backed up, I recursively changed the ownership of /var/subsonic: sudo chown -R subsonic:subsonic /var/subsonic
9. Edited /etc/default/subsonic to increase the memory allocation and change the subsonic user to "subsonic": sudo nano /etc/default/subsonic
10. Restart subsonic: sudo service subsonic start

That was all it took. Everything back and running and just the way I left it before it stopped working.

I'm convinced that an upgrade to oracle java 8 that I didn't pay sufficient attention to broke the install and caused the jetty errors that resulted in HTTP 503.

Hope this helps someone.

I'm on Ubuntu 18.04 and subsonic works fine with java 8. But as soon, as I switch to the actual java 11 I get the error 503.

0 /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java 1101 auto mode
1 /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java 1101 manual mode
* 2 /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java 1081 manual mode

Does is work for anyone with java 11? I don't want to try the complete uninstalling unless I know that it works for anybody and your are not all using the old java version. Thanks!

Cheers

Unsure if this is the same error, but seems to be. Was running Subsonic 6.1.5 under Ubuntu server 16.04.5 (headless). Installation and config of subsonic had worked perfectly until it wasn't. The only change that happened was a normal linux apt update/upgrade of the following:

    libcups2:amd64 (2.1.3-4ubuntu0.6, 2.1.3-4ubuntu0.7)
    cups-common:amd64 (2.1.3-4ubuntu0.6, 2.1.3-4ubuntu0.7)
    libcupsimage2:amd64 (2.1.3-4ubuntu0.6, 2.1.3-4ubuntu0.7)

Upon reboot, subsonic no longer rendered a webpage. The service was running as expected, ports were open, and there were no errors in the log. In all respects, subsonic was working perfectly, but no webpage.

I tried the changes noted in this thread and (editing the properties file) and I found that this file is overwritten, apparently by subsonic, at restart. Every change I made to that file (edited and saved as root and confirmed) was completely gone after subsonic restart via sudo service subsonic restart. No other changes were made to the app or the system. it is, simply put, broken. My only available solution at this point is a purge/reinstall. I will update after that.

Interesting. I did a complete purge and reinstall only to find exactly the same outcome; subsonic is working as it should, but no web page. I went through my network checklist and found that if I ran sudo ufw status it shoed "4040 ALLOW Anywhere", but if I looked at the /etc/iptables.up.rules the open 4040 port was not shown. Opening up my Webmin page, I went to firewall config and saw that 4040 was not listed as an open port. I also noted that Webmin is set to directly edit IPV4 rules. When I added the port to the Webmin rules and then saved the config, the port rules was written to the iptables file.

After that, the subsonic page showed up as it should.

If linux ufw command said the port was open, why wasn't it? Is Webmin controlling the ufw files separately from the linux OS? Why did it work perfectly before and then suddenly not??

I'm in the 503 Error boat too. I've been updating the server and wasn't paying attention. I've tried installing Java11 to no help either. I'm pretty rudimentary in my diagnostic skills on Ubuntu server, but I hope to help.

I'm not sure if it helps, but here is the error code I recently found.

Re: HTTP ERROR 503

Postby Numanoid » Mon Jan 21, 2019 10:24 am

Just had this problem and managed to fix it. This is on Windows 10. Thought I'd post it in case it helps others.

What I did:

Went to C:\subsonic folder (I also found a Subsonic folder under Program Files (x86) though nothing I did there helped, but if that's the only one you have see what you can do there).

In the C:\subsonic\db.backup folder I found four files: subsonic.backup, subsonic.data, subsonic.properties, and subsonic.script. I noticed that they had a modified date of a few days before the ones currently in the regular "db" folder. So I simply copied all the files from "db.backup" into "db".

After restarting the service, it worked! Hope this can help someone else.

Not sure that Java 11 will not help. I used the default openjdk (sudo apt install openjdk-8-jre). You should check that your ports are open. My issue was absolutely the ufw firewall. Make sure that your subsonic port is open that it is opening at reboot.

The ports are open, there is even an open connection to it from my Subsonic app. I'm sure that I, and others here, are having some type of conflict with the web interface.

Hello... same sad history here... I've been a happy Subsonic user for the past 6 or 7 years, great app, not perfect but always managed to solve everything.

Now this is frustrating. In my case, the 503 error appeared after a fresh install of everything. I was with Linux Mint 17.1 and Subsonic 6.1.4 (don't know which java), and I've not had any troubles during last year. Today I moved to Linux Mint 19, fresh install on the same PC, and after setting everything I installed Subsonic 6.1.5 (and openjdk-8-jre following instructions, although I have openjdk-11-jre already installed). Subsonic_args correctly set up, open port in the router (it was already) and open port through ufw (this is new to me, Linux Mint 17.1 did not have a GUI for ufw, and besides I don't even remember that I needed to open ports in the linux firewall for Subsonic in the past). I have tried almost all the suggested solutions but nothing worked for me.

I changed EVERYTHING in this case, so it's a mess to find out where is the clue to the problem. I paste my log here, maybe some expert may help... Thanks

PS: I cannot find any db in this Subsonic install. Where is it supposed to be?

Re: HTTP ERROR 503

Postby kapsoter » Tue Jan 29, 2019 12:27 am

kapsoter wrote:Hello... same sad history here...

Postby kapsoter » Tue Jan 29, 2019 1:17 am

Finally got it!! Hope this helps, I managed to get it working again.

First of all, it seems that port opening or forwarding is not the issue in this case. Here's what I did:

1. Purge installation (sudo apt-get purge subsonic), and manually remove the resting files and folders (/var/subsonic)
2. Again install openjdk-8-jre as suggested (although my system has openjdk-11-jre installed). AND tell the system that I want to use the older one like that:
adenet wrote:Same here after upgrade Ubuntu from 17.10 to 18.04. Change Java back from 10 to 8 (openjdk) did the trick.

update-alternatives --config java

0 /usr/lib/jvm/java-10-oracle/bin/java 1091 automatischer Modus
1 /usr/lib/jvm/java-10-oracle/bin/java 1091 manueller Modus
* 2 /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java 1081 manueller Modus

. I think this one really made the difference.

3. Reinstall the latest subsonic version as usual. I don't think that java environment has anything to do with the subsonic installation (it just provides the means to execute it, right?), but in my case, in prior 2 or 3 attempts, installation did not complete well (there were lacking files and folders in /var/subsonic, such as db folder or subsonic.properties file). But when I chose the "right" jre, installation went just fine for the first time. Maybe the 4th attempt would have gone fine regardless of whether java environment was running? Hope we will never know, I'm not reinstalling it until my pc crashes and falls to hell, and have to buy another one.

Cheers!
