Slow page load of music folder contents

Page loading of music folders is very slow. On the filesystem, I sort my music into genres; when I open my favourite (approx 1100 artist subdirectories), loading the list of sub-dirs takes more than 3 minutes (~200 seconds). After about 1:30s page load *begins*, and slowly increases the list. A list with 26 sub-dirs (alphabetical order) takes about 10 seconds.
The search-function works like a charm, due to the hashtable I guess. But I really enjoy "browsing" through the music base, is there any way to speed up things? Thanks in advance!

Hardware Platform: Ubuntu Linux 10.04 LTS (Lucid), 32 Bit; headless ViaC7 hardware appliance, 1GiB memory, 3TB SATA HDD for music. The syslog remains rather low (0.8 immediately after page-load finished).
