After update video will not stream

So yesterday everything was working fine under 4.5 but now all of the video does not show up as links, I can not add them to playlists, this is super frustrating as i really enjoy being able to access my media on the go. Is there a reason that this would happen after updating? I have re-indexed everything, I have also checked all the settings that i know about, is this an issue with the players that i am using? Occasionally i will be able to start to play the file but it does not actually play anyting, just has the VLC logo on a black screen where the video normally plays. Any help would be wonderful! I have downgraded back to 4.5, running on Windows 7 Professional 64bit....

Check your permission settings for user a/c SS is running under.
When you upgrade it resets the SS service to run under the standard system a/c - has that got permission to read the video files?

It sounds like you're attempting to use an external player rather than the built-in JW Player. I have had problems with external player features and rarely use it. VLC doesn't seem to open in an independent window, but tries to open within the browser page and just fails. The only way I've ever been able to get the external player function working is by using WMP as the default player and calling it through IE.

If you delete any external players that are being called, the videos should play in the webplayer. i have this working fine on my sites running on Win 64 bit platforms.

After upgrading, be sure that if you are accessing external storage (network shares) you edit the Subsonic service to give it logon vredentials needed to access the share.

The standard windows installer works fine, but I currently use the WAR version as it seems to be slightly faster and handles transcoding a little better.

SS = Subsonic
a/c - I think he's referring to the account permission settings.

If your read the Monroe world tutorial in the Tutorials section, there is a clear explanation of how to set the proper logon rights for the Subsonic service so that it can access a network share or a folder that has restricted access settings. Briefly, you open the services management console and select the subsonic service, open the properties and look at the logon account that the service uses, If needed, you have the service use the logon account of a user that has access to the folder that stores the music library.

This may, or may not be your problem. Normally, if there are logon rights involved you won't see the folders listed in Subsonic.

I would need to know more details about your platform and storage configuration to give you more info. If you files are stored locally on the same drive that hosts Subsonic, access should not be an issue unless you've modified the security settings on the library folders.

Also, video files will not have a + sign as they cannot be added to a playlist as yet.

I guess the first obvious questions are:

Why are you using port 80?

and

Why do you have the java memory set so high?

Did you even read the set up Tutorials for Windows/Android in the Tutorial section?

One of the major objectives of the 4.7 rewrite of SS was to address memory useage and to shift more functionality into the database so that memory useage would be minimized?

Based on your posts and your logs, it looks like you've gone out of your way to keep SS from working.

I've got about 8 Subsonic instances running on Windows - netbooks, desktops, 32 bit, 64 bit, Win 7, Win 2008, Win 2008R2, WHS v1, WHS 2011, and even one on Windows XP. They all work. Audio, video, Recorded HDTV.

Subsonic on Windows runs fine unless you either disregard the installation instructions, or go to great lengths to goof it up.

Install Java
Install Subsonic - on anything but port 80/443
Validate your port forwarding at canyouseeme.org
Add Media folders - If folders are not local, use network shares - DO NOT use mapped drives.
Edit logon credentials for the SS service if not using local drive as per intructions in the tutorial.

Somehow I think there are things going on here that you're not sharing with us.

Alright, I think i got it, after uninstalling and getting rid of all installation folders, did a complete reinstall using port 8080, everything looks like it will be working after it gets done scanning/indexing files in the library, it will prolly take all day as i have 2.5TB of media (yes its all legal). Thank you all for your help!

Congrats!

Scanning time is inversely proportional to hardware horsepower. The initial scan takes the longest with subsequent scans usually taking a lot less time.

I've got about 4.6 TB of stuff - about 60k files are music, the rest is video, recorded TV etc. It only takes about 5 mins. to scan on my server, but my server has a bit of horsepower with dual quad core xeons and the media is on a RAID 50 array that can pump out at 850Mbps.

Scanning hasn't been much of an issue on my other servers that are not as powerful, but lower speed storage may slow that process. Once it's done, I think you'll be pretty pleased with the result.

Keep us posted and let us know if you run into any other issues.

yeah i am running a 8 core 3.2 xeon system with 6GB of DDR2 ECC FB dims, it is done indexing and searching now. Took much less time than 4.5 that i was on before! players are working for video again, i am pretty sure either the JW player or HTML files were corrupted during update.... like i said, everything seems to be working well now!
