So mind telling us which operating system you use?

Under linux my way was installing java, tomcat6 and apache2 with ssl support. The apache works as reverse proxy to the tomcat which listens only on localhost. Next copy the subsonic.war to the tomcat folder and start the server.
Then youll be able to configure your subsonic instance via web.

Otherwise you can use the distribution packages from subsonic. But they run as root which is an absolute nightmare.
