UTF-8 - can't get it to work

Hey all,
yes i've used the search and i found a solution but i couldnt get it to work

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS

Everything done as root:

If i list a folder everything returns okay, so i guess the locales are installed and running correctly

But in subsonic if it's a folder it won't show up (figures) and filenames are with ??? and won't play.

I've edited /etc/default/subsonic and added

export LANG=de_DE.UTF-8

which should do the trick...but it doesn't.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

In my start script, I have

java -Dfile.encoding=UTF8 [...]

Also for SS 4.7 which uses the tags much more then previous versions you need to make sure your tags are also UTF8.
