Plays some tracks, not others

Postby Dogface051 » Fri Nov 23, 2012 11:18 pm

Applies to both Sonic and the paid subscription ROKU version. Sonic will play ALL that tracks that I own, but not the ones from Rhapsody that are stored in my computer. I can play the stored Rhapsody files on Windows Media Player and Real Player, but not on Sonic. Using ROKU, Sonic finds all the files and "plays" them (the timer counts down the remaining time left to play) but there is no sound. In the PC version, when I click the track to play, it makes a "click" and moves on to the next file in the queue, makes a sound, and moves on to the next track. The Rhapsody files have been downloaded to my PC for off-line use.

Thanks!

It is likely you have downloaded DRM WMA tracks from Rhapsody? Only a qualified player, like the two you mentioned, will play those tracks.

Or use certain sound editing software (e.g. Switch Sound File Converter - http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html) to open the DRM'd files, save as .wav (to strip the DRM), then re-encode to your favorite file type.

I stumbled upon this trick while creating a CD for my wedding that included a couple 320kbps (DRMd) .mp3s from Amazon.com that I wanted to convert to .wav and burn to a CD.

Note that this last trick will decrease sound quality. If possible, try acquiring the same media non-DRM:ed instead.

No, it won't decrease sound quality if you do it right. Save it as a .flac, then back as a .wav, for instance to never go down the compressed music file path.

Most people don't have .wav as their favorite file type (and if you do, you'd probably want the original lossless file, not a lossy file re-encoded to .wav).

I'm aware that some music is hard to find and you might find yourself in a situation where this is your only option. But at the same time, I see people converting lossy-lossy way too often without realizing what's happening behind the scenes and not checking the spectrals of their music. So I'd just like to add that this technique should be used as a last resort and the resulting files shouldn't be spread.
