I set it all up I can play music on my phone and other computers I read the guide and step by step I got to the end successfully. I bought the Subsonic Windows Phone app and now I am just about to donate. I new at server stuff so dont laugh but in order to play my music on my phone or any other computer anywhere anytime I have to have the main computer at home running right? 'My Server' right? I thought it was going to be like skydrive or something where I have webspace, anyhow just give it to my straight and laugh if you want. thanks

You have to keep your own computer running to serve the music to mobile clients. If you don't want to, I guess you should look into a solution like Google Music where you initially upload music to their servers from your computer at home, and then stream it from them to your phone. (allowing you to turn your computer at home off)

The whole reason you don't have to pay a monthly fee is because you are using your own computer as a "Server", so unfortunately yes you have to keep your computer on at all times in order for your music to be usable. It would be nice to only have to pay a one time fee for something like skydrive, but they have continual costs related to keeping those servers up and running for you and everyone else to use, so those solutions usually end up costing a monthly fee.

And I don't think anyone is going to laugh at you. It took a while when I first getting started into tech stuff to realize that all a server is is a computer somewhere else running services on it 24/7. When I was younger I always thought of servers as some special machines that did something different to host my web pages :D

I believe google's play music gives you a certain amount of free room to use, but past that you are required to pay a monthly fee.

I think the first 20GB is free. I put some of my favorites on there just in case I lose connection to one of my servers,
