IP config help

Hello,

I'm trying to set up Subsonic to access remotely. I've gone through the tutorial here: http://monroeworld.com/android/subsonic/

I can access my server via my android phone remotely, and I can access it via my laptop when I'm on my wireless network (the same one my server runs on). But I cant access it with my laptop when I'm on another network. I called my ISP for help in setting up a static IP for my router but they said it would cost me an extra $6 a month and a $25 setup fee.

Am I on the right track here in setting this up? Is there a way to avoid having to pay for a static IP? I simply want to access my music from my laptop when I'm not at home. FYI I have Subsonic running on a Windows 7 machine and am trying to access it via my macbook pro.

Thanks for any help

Greg

Check out No-ip.com. They provide a free "dynamic DNS" service that will replace the need for a static IP address from your ISP.

Once you have that set up and working, you will need to "forward" port 4040 on your router to the machine running Subsonic.

Check out www.portforward.com for instructions on how to do this for your specific router.

Or just use the yourname.subsonic.org address - that will also correctly assign the correct port

You certainly do not need a static external IP address but you do need a static internal IP on the server.

It says it cant see it due to connection time out. I'm using port 4040...

Then the port is not open in the router :(
Check the instructions at portforward.com again and reboot the router after (sometimes routers need a bit of a nudge)

As per the tutorial section that includes the monroe world instructions. You will never connect from out side if you can't see the port open from canyouseeme.org. Thst is telling you that the request isn't getting to the server either because the port forwarding is incorrect, (most likely) or there is a firewall blocking somewhere in the path between you internet access point and the Subsonic port. If you can access your server from another device inside your network then the server is open and that points to the router as the culprit. Recheck the entries in the router admin pages to verify the forwarding entries are correct or more likely edit what is wrong, and check canyouseeme again.
