new computer issues

i have been a paying subsonic user for a few months now and was just starting to get the hang of everything and enjoy the subsonic service when my old computer decided to take a nosedive and die on me. i purchased a new computer and think i have all the port forwarding correct so i can stream when i'm not on my home network. the only setback that i see now is in Settings->Network->Access your server over the internet using an easy-to-remember address is now telling me that the web address that i registered and donated to use permanently is already in use and that i need to select another and donate once again. how can i get back everything (my access and my users/members access also) with my old "mywebaddress.subsonic.org"?

i did figure out that i had to re-enter my license key which solved the myserver.subsonic.org issues. i did have about 7 or 8 users with their own username and passwords. from what i can see, it looks like i will have to add them again. is this correct?

Yes unless you can access your old subsonic folder :(

everything was working fine for a little while and i was accessing it from outside of my network and then i started to have issues again. port forwarding looks ok, it gives me the error on the access your server option "Status: Failed to test web address. Connect to subsonic.org/66.49.215.227:80 timed out (ConnectTimeoutException) " and i cannot connect from outside of my network and, of course, none of the other users can connect as they are not on the same local network. i did not alter any settings from the time that it was working fine, what could have happened?

The subsonic.org server was down briefly so the redirection service for the vanity names was offline. It's back up now. This has happened a few times before.

A good example of when it isn't always just you that's having an issue.

thank you all again for your help. just got up and it looks like everything is functioning great again. i'm not getting any error messages on the network connection page so that's a good sign. i will have to wait to leave the house to see if it's working outside of my network. once again, thank you again for the help!!!

Whenever it works from inside your network, if you check the port with canyoseeme.org and it responds, you'll be good to go from outside the network as well. The other way to check while still at home is to use the app on a cell phone or other device connected through your cell provider.

everything worked ok for a day or so and then some more issues have come up. when i'm within my network, canyouseeme.org sees both of the ports that my subsonic network page on the settings page tell me are both being forwarded. as i leave my house and use the subsonic app on my phone i can access my library for quite some time. when i get to work, it's hit or miss if it will connect to my subsonic.org address without timing out. sometimes, i have to wait an hour or so until it will actually connect to my subsonic.org server address. is there some kind of setting on my end that i can do to make this a more reliable service? seems spotty at best some times... thanx again.

when i can't connect via my subsonic.org server address from work on the laptop. i usually go into the settings on my phone app and test the connection from there also. it usually gives me a network error occured message, retrys 4 times and then gives up saying there is a connection failure. a few hours later i will try and everything will work great like nothing wrong ever happened earlier. doesn't make much sense to me...

How are you connecting at work? Over their network wifi? When you use your phone is it using wifi or a cell connection. Workplace sometimes block connections and cell connections will sometimes timeout if the signal isn't providing enough bandwidth.

Also - we just had a brief outage of the subsonic.org redirection service a couple days ago. If you were trying to connect when that was happening that would explain a lot.

You might also write down your external ip address and port number in case it happens again and then try connecting that way.

using hardline connection at work and 4g on cell. neither want to connect. i actually bought a new home computer b'cuz i was having these issues with the old computer and figured that my subsonic server on a brand new computer might alleviate these issues but no dice. brand new cable modem/router so i don't think that is the issue either. i can't figure it out.

everything worked ok after the brief outage a couple of days ago. i've written down external ip and port and tried connecting that way to no avail.

Now of course, i try to connect again and it is fine like nothing happened. Could it be issues with my Time Warner Cable service maybe?

Sure. That's always a possibility. When an outage occurs you have to check from end to end to figure out what's wrong. It can be your server, your router, your internet connection at either end, and any or all software issues on all the devices involved.

One of the best aspects of learning Subsonic is that you get a real crash course in networking.

I moved off TW several years ago when Verizon Fios became available in my area. Best move ever. TW was ok, but occasional outages and performance variability were always issue when I was on TW. In my neighborhhod when everyone loggoed on Saturday morning my bandwidth would look like dial up even though I had their fastest available package.

All those issues were fixed by moving to Fios. Never down and the same speed all the time. I have the 35/35 service and when I test it at speed test.net I consistently get 43/40 - better than advertised!

Also keep in mind that the upload service from your server is the more important parameter for getting the data to you at the receiving device. It's for that reason that I actually think about the extra $45/month it would cost me to bump up my connection to the Fios Quantum 150/65 service. Of course you only need spees like this for video, but I'd at least like to see 1 - 2 mbps service on the upload side for music. If you get 4 users listening to 256kbps tracks at the same time you will saturate 1mbps service. More speed is always better unless you're ingesting it.

i was with fios when i lived in maryland but no dice on the fios here in north carolina, stuck with time warner. i will just keep an eye on it. i have noticed my internet going out for short periods of time, i have a feeling this could be the culprit. i just might have to get time warner back out here. thx again for the help. if i run into any other issues, i will post again.

Also keep in mind that routers also begin to fail with age that usually starts showing up as intermittent connection failure that happens at a given heat level. If your router is more than 2 years old I'd be suspicious of that, but this can also begin happening even earlier (as in brand new!).
