Ubuntu Newbie

I really want to make the move away from Microsft and on to Ubuntu - however getting Subsonic up and running is proving to be quite a challenge, and as much as I use Subsonic I would actually go back to MS rather than lose it - but I would much rather figure out what I'm doing wrong!

First, I was able to get Subsonic installed on the latest version of Ubuntu Desktop (12.04.2 LTS), and I successfully launched Subsonic at localhost://4040. That's when everything started going downhill.

The first step I had trouble with was finding my music folders. I keep my files on external drives, and while Ubuntu recognizes and browses these drives without issue, I can't get Subsonic to locate them at all in the settings field. I've tried every path configuration that I could think of, and nothing is working.

From what I have seen, the path should be /media/(dive name)/music folder/. But I have not been able to get any variation of that to work.

Lastly, more important after I get everything working - I tried to follow the instructions in the documentation to alter the permissions and run Subsonic as a non-root user, but while I can edit the file, I can't save it. Is this just a permissions thing that I am overlooking?

Greatly appreciate any/all help!

Are you opening the config file as root? If you can't make changes I would bet not. Do you use a dm or console?

I am opening it as root, from within the terminal window.

When I'm in a console I type:
sudo nano /etc/default/subsonic

Enter my pass, make changes and save.

If you can't do that maybe something to do with groups?

Im not too sure really, amateur Linux user.

Amateur is right. I'll give that way a try.

Anyone have an idea as to my question about the path to the external drive?

Are they NAS?

Only thing I can offer is browse to where your main folder is say: /home/johndoe/media/music in a console. the command pwd will print the working directory. Copy that to the settings spot in the browser. And scan media.
