Can Subsonic run on drive attached to router with PC off?

I am new here, and I have been looking for a way to access my music collection without having my PC on all the time. Does Subsonic need to be installed and running on a PC in order to work? Is there any way to install it on an external hard drive attached to a router (ASUS RT-N66U), and through the router have the music files available to stream to other devices in the house such as an iPad or mobile phone? My router has some sort of built in media server (Samba share, DLNA), so I was wondering if this would allow a Subsonic music collection to be visible?

Does anyone know of a way to have music (or videos) available for streaming on a hard drive attached to an ASUS RT-N66U router? I will be setting this up in the next 3 days and can also install custom firmware such as Tomato or Asuswrt-Merlin, etc.. if that helps to enable the router's built in media server capabilities.

Any help would be appreciated, as I am trying to avoid buying a NAS or building an HTPC.

Thanks.

Subsonic is a program and needs a CPU, RAM memory etc to run. Sindre is working on it though so it might appear in a later version.

Thanks for clearing that up. I have found the same scenario is required for most software-based media servers such as Plex, where they need a PC to be running. I was hoping that the media server capabilities of my router might offer some solutions for a connected hard drive, but will keep looking for alternatives to having to purchase a NAS or have a PC always running. If anyone has ideas as to how to access music or video files through a router to mobile devices, I'd be interested!
