Hi, I successfully installed Subsonic 4.7 on Ubuntu, and my server seems to play music fine when connecting to http://my.ip.address:4040 using a web browser.

I installed the 3.6 version of the android app to my Nexus 4, using the apk at http://sourceforge.net/projects/subsonic/files/android/. When trying to connect to http://my.ip.address using the app, I receive

"Connection failure. Didn't understand the reply. Please check the server address."

What steps do you suggest I take to diagnose the problem?

What IP address are you using? Your internal address (192.168.x.x), or your external one provided by your ISP?

If you are using the one from your ISP, you need to a) port forward port 4040 on your router to the machine running Subsonic, and b) put the :4040 at the end of the IP address in the configuration on your Android.

Let's test this methodically... try each of these and let me know where it fails. Once it fails you don't need to continue on:

1. On the subsonic server, open
Code: Select all
http://127.0.0.1:YourHTTPPort/YourContextPath
Does Subsonic open? If you log on, does it work?
2. On the subsonic server, open
Code: Select all
http://Your.Server.Internal.IPAddress:YourHTTPPort/YourContextPath
Does Subsonic open? If you log on, does it work?
3. On a different computer on the same network open
Code: Select all
http://Your.Server.Internal.IPAddress:YourHTTPPort/YourContextPath
Does Subsonic open? If you log on, does it work?
4. From outside the firewall (ie, from a computer NOT on your network, like a friend at his house) open
Code: Select all
http://Your.Server.External.IPAddress:YourHTTPPort/YourContextPath
Does Subsonic open? If you log on, does it work?
5. From outside the firewall (ie, from a computer NOT on your network, like a friend at his house) open
Code: Select all
http://YourCustomDomainName.subsonic.org
Does Subsonic open? If you log on, does it work?
6. From the subsonic server computer, open
Code: Select all
http://YourCustomDomainName.subsonic.org
Does Subsonic open? If you log on, does it work? if not, what address (if any) are you redirected to?
7. From a different computer on the same network as the Subsonic Server, open
Code: Select all
http://YourCustomDomainName.subsonic.org
Does Subsonic open? If you log on, does it work?

Let us know where it fails.
