Subsonic in my own ISP hosting provider??

Postby cokie69 » Fri Mar 29, 2013 9:33 pm

Hi there,

A newbie in this arena... so forgive me if I'm asking "silly" questions.

I'd like to upload all my MUSIC (not video!) collection to my ISP hosting account and stream it from there so I can listen to it on my phone wherever I go. In the XBMC forum I have been recommended to look at Subsonic and I'd like to know whether Subsonic can be installed remotely on my ISP hosting account (Linux) by ftp'd it (no root/admin access!) or else if it's not possible, which other software would you recommend to do so?

No thanks, I already have a hosting account where I have my websites... and I don't want yet another account at another provider just to be able to use Subsonic

Thanks to all for your responses.

You can run subsonic on your own home computer, and not have to worry about your ISP "losing" your data.

The only "catch" is that you need to open up port 4040 (the default port, which can be changed), and forward it to your local computer from the router. Not difficult to do at all, as there are instructions for almost every router on www.portforward.com. You also need to leave your PC on 24/7, or at least during the times you are away and want to listen to music.
