MP4 files not appearing in Subsonic lists

I've encountered a problem seeing MP4 video files since having to re-install Subsonic as a result of my PC dying. New Pc, Windows 8, Subsonic settings set up as before
except now MP4 files do not display at all. I've set up the video location as c:\Users\Public\Videos with two sub-folders within it - one for non-MP4 videos and one for MP4 videos. The non-MP4(album) folder contains AVI, FLV, anf MPG files. When selected, from the left-side list, it lists all within as 'songs' in a playlist and they play.
The MP4 folder(album) when selected says 'empty list'. It contains at present 3 movies and 10-12 TV episodes, all with .MP4 type. They are true MP4 (H.264/AAC) as
processed by Handbrake. MP4 is specified in the Settings/General tab and removed from the Transcoding types, since it will play as is by the intended player - ROKU/SubsonicTV. I am using 4.7Beta, but the same happens uder std 4.7. I'm missing something obviously and have been changing stuff, renaming things, etc
until I'm out of things to try. Suggestions ?

My Android and Windows 7 phones and Nexus 7 tablet will no longer see any video files, either mp4 or avi (not tried others). I've re-set the database on desktop app, re-installed the server and re-installed the Andrid apps, but still no videos showing. No idea what's wrong, posted on several forums but no-one seems to know what's up. V. frustrating!
