Problems with new comcast voice modem

Postby jasonochranek » Tue Jul 02, 2013 11:09 pm

hello, i've been using subsonic on my android phone for a couple of years with no problems. i just switched my old cable modem out for a new comcast modem witch features their telephone service. now my wifi on my phone won't work with subsonic. 3g works, but it's definitely slower. the service works fine with my computer. the modem is supposed to be a wireless router, so i'm guessing the issue is getting the new comcast one to work with my existing Belking. the comcast modem's a RCA DHG536. figured I'd look for help here before i call comcast. thanks,
jason

Sounds like you may be double NAT ed - two routers on the same network fighting each other to do the DHCP and routing functions. You can have two wireless routers on the same network using one as a WAP, but for most users it's probably just easier to use one and disable the other to keep it simple.

The bottom line is that there can only be ONE traffic cop on the network.

comcast probably won't be able to assist - they want you to use their router...

You can do some searches online for how to set yourself up in "bridging" mode, meaning your comcast router just forwards everything to your Belkin router, and then your Belkin will decide what to do with the traffic (forward to Subsonic, etc...)

Found a phone number to call to have "them" (don't know who this is, maybe Comcast) set you for bridging mode: 800-363-2416
Not sure if the number is still live as the post I found with that number is just over a year old.. But worth a try.

Thanks for the replies, Issues I've run into... The comcast router/modem/phone thingy doesn't have any hardwire Ethernet inputs, it's only a wireless router, so i need both hooked up for my wired connections. I've read, but havn't confirmed that if you bridge the comcast unit to your router, than you lose the phone line on the unit...

So there's no way to hard wire the internet connection to a switch? They are using something that only allows wireless connections to the router? Do you have a model number for the Comcast device?

This would be the first instance I've heard of that didn't have the ability to connect the WAN access point to Ethernet.

Strange.

The model number's RCA DHG536. There's one Ethernet out port that goes to the router or computer. Everything else is supposed to be wireless...

Well then, there you go. You'll have to research turning off all the routing in the Comcast unit and just have it pass the connection to the Belkin router. Turn off the wifi on the Comcast so that it doesn't conflict with the Belkin.

Strangely, this looks like an older unit that doesn't have easily found documentation. I located a site that claims to have the pdf manual, but it wants to install an exe file on my computer to view the file - don't think that's going to happen on my watch.

In any event, if you plug a PC into the Ethernet port you should be able to open a command prompt and type ipconfig /all in Windows and find the base ip address of the router - probably 192.168.x.x usually 1 or zero for the x positions. Once you know the unit's address you should be able to just type the address into the attached PC's browser to get to the unit's admin pages. Once there, turn off wifi and try to figure out how to turn off DHCP and have the unit just act as a pass through to the Belkin unit where it can handle the network addressing and firewall chores (port forwarding). This should give you the control over your network that you want with more flexibility and connectivity using the Ethernet ports on the Belkin if needed. Once the Comcast unit is set up as a dummy pass-through then wire it to the WAN port on the Belkin unit and access the Belkin admin pages with a PC to administer your network and control ip addressing internally and port forwarding if needed to connect to the Subsonic host machine.

HTH - Let us know how you make out.

EDIT: Just follow these instructions!

It doesn't look like this unit is anything more than an access point. I don't see any references to wireless service for the unit. Your should be able to plug it into the Belkin and hit the reset button on the RCA modem and have it connect.

wow. so after resetting my belkin and comcast routers, and trying to reconfigure the comcast modem i still couldn't get subsonic to work right. now, as i stated in my original post, 3g worked (it seemed slower at first, but i think that's because i was used to wifi speeds) but not wifi. out of desperation i uninstalled and re-installed the app. now everything works great... why i needed to do this to get the app to work with a new modem i'll never know. coincidence maby? thanks again for everyone's help. sorry to waste your time.

Yes -

and sometimes rebooting the router enables the firewall settings ...
