HOW TO VIEW CONTENTS IN ROOT DIRECTORY
Posted: Sat Jul 06, 2013 11:14 pmAfter a long time of trying to figure out how to view movies in my root directory, I figured out how to without having to move ANY files around!!! This is pretty easy, and simple, just pay attention.
This is tested and working with a Windows Server 2008 R2 as my home server. It should work on Windows 7 for sure, and should work on Vista.
You need to create a symbolic link (symlink) on the drive you wish to do this with. Linux users, if you're using Linux, you are probably familiar with how to do this. If not, you'll have to google, as it's been a long time since I've used Linux and don't remember how.
First, open a command prompt as administrator. If you don't know how, click the Start menu button and right click on "command prompt". Choose "Run as administrator".
Second, lets type cd\ and press enter, just to clean up the command prompt to avoid any confusion.
Third, type mklink /D "virtual_Folder_Here" "Real_Folder_Here" . In other words, if your root directory is D:\Public\Movies, you'll want to create a new folder in D:\Public like Subsonic first.
Then type something like this - mklink D/ "D:\Public\Subsonic\Movies" "D:\Public\Movies" and press enter.
Do not type the " quote marks. I put them there to separate / break things up.
This will create a virtual directory that has virtual copies of all your root files. Don't worry, being virtual, they don't take up any more space than a regular shortcut would.
Now in Subsonic, add your new virtual directory - D:\Public\Subsonic and scan it. Don't put the root directory D:\Public\Subsonic\Movies, just the folder that it's in that you created above.
Now scan the new folder and voila! I am viewing my entire movie collection on my tablet and didn't have to move a single file!
