Can't install subsonic

Postby Musick » Fri Jul 19, 2013 9:34 pm

I previously had problems with subsonic, so after uninstalling, i was not able to reinstall the software.

I made a post here, but never got any help, so I reinstalled windows and now I'm trying to install subsonic again, but I'm getting the same error.
It fails when installing subsonic-service.exe (first failure at least). I did not have java installed on my computer, so i installed the one subsonic gave me.

Here is an image of what happenes.

Does anyone have any idea what's causing this? I can not get this program to work :(

Thanks in advance!

Did you install from the same download package? I'd try downloading it again and installing from the new download.

Also make sure you have the latest Java and Adobe installed.

Hello mate!

Thank you very much for your reply!
Unfortunately, that did not work either. I uninstalled subsonic. Deleted every folder I could find and registry entries. Java is 7 update 25 (32 bit) and Adobe Flash Player 11 Plugin, both downloaded a few minutes ago.
I then reinstalled from a fresh download, like you suggested, but I get the same error message. It's really weird. This is on a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1 64bit.

Got any other ideas for what I can try? I really really want this program to work. It's amazing! :)

Could you translate the error message into English for us non Dutch (guess??) speaking users
Google translate seems to be having a bad day ( at least for me) so I presume you are not having trouble with your cat ( I jest not  )

Looks like the ol' Windows has encountered a problem msg and the Subsonic service installer has failed to respond.

Looks like maybe the original uninstall didn't properly remove the Subsonic service.

I'd open control panel/ Administrative tools / Services and look to see if there is an entry for Subsonic. If it's in the list select stop if it's running and the give it a try.

Hehe... its's Norwegian ;)

The dialog in front says something like:

Code: Select all
Subsonic-service.exe has stopped working.
Windows may search the Internet for a possible solution.
-> Look for a solution on the Internet, and close the program.
-> Close the program.
Problem signature:
Problem event name: BEX
Program name:  subsonic-service.exe
Program version: 0.0.0.0
Timestamp for the program: 50a12bbc
and so on...

It is as you describe, GJ51, but the weird thing is that this happened on a fresh installation of windows, after having formated my harddrive. Should think that would reset things ;)
But it's what happnened the first time, which forced me to format my computer.
I will try your suggestion and report back :) Thanks

You should not have any issues related to incomplete removal of the previous installation if you reformatted the drive and did a fresh OS install. Did you install the latest Java and Flash before attempting the Subsonic install?

In your case I would have installed the OS, run all updates, which can take a lot of time depending on your connection speed, then Java, then Flash, do that everything is now a clean install of the latest versions of all 3. Then proceed with the Subsonic installation.

I assume you are using the Windows installer for Subsonic? That should run pretty smoothly once the above steps are completed.

I did a complete update after OS install, but did not install Java and Flash. Didn't even know it needed Flash. And i assumed it installed a working version of Java and not some useless version ;) At least that's what it did the last time I installed Subsonic. Tho that was an older version.

Anyways... I'll try to reinstall OS. This was the first software I tried to install, since it was the reason I formated. No need for time consuming backups this time ;)

Thanks for your replies, gents! :) Appreciate it.

Well, excuse my French, but this is f$#!!#g retarded.

Reinstalled OS a second time. Installed every windows update. Installed latest java. Installed the latest flash player. Restarted computer and double checked that everything was up to date.
Downloaded Subsonic 4.8, ran installer aaaaand.... it failed! :( Same error message as last time. What the fuck...

I downloaded 32 bit java since the software is 32 bits. That is correct right? Even though OS is 64 bit? Please don't tell me I screwed up here ;)

Any other ideas?

You only need 64 bit Java if you use the 64 bit browser.

I use Chrome.

Did you get the java install from here?

http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

There's a link in the Windows section that will verify if Java has been installed correctly. I have also seen a few users not wait long enough for the Java install to complete as it has a strange quirck in that it seems to disappear and not be doing anything during the process. If you're not patient and give it time to finish it may not install properly, Check Control/Panel - Programs and Features to see if Java is installed. If not run it again and give it plenty of time to finish, then verify from the link on the Java download page.

I've never had any problems like you describe with the Windows installer.

I use a 32 bit browser and I have verified the Java installation. It's all fine and dandy. And I downloaded from the link you provided.

This problem seems very strange. My guess is it got something to do with the BEX error part. I've searched and tried some workarounds, but nothing has worked yet.
Is there an older version of the program I could try? This is super weird :S Could there be some hardware that has the wrong drivers?

From all you've said and done, a hardware issue seems to be the most likely cause. When I suspect a hardware problem the first thing I check is device manager for any yellow question marks.

I'm not sure how comfortable you'd be with the install, but I've migrated all my Subsonic instances to the war version. Install Java, install Apache Tomcat - for Subsonic 4.8 you need Tomcat 6 - and then give that a run. Not too complicated, but different from the std Win install. The key is to assign the port you want to use for Subsonic to the Tomcat install. I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but that's the easiest if you want to try the war version.

Another suggestion would br to try the Madsonic version

http://forum.madsonic.org/viewforum.php?f=17

I think you have to register in the forum to download. The 5.0.3510 beta 3 version is pretty stable and has a ton more features than Subsonic.

Madsonic war version will run on Tomcat 7 - unlike Subsonic which requires Tomcat 6.

From my quick googling...appears to be a buffer overflow caused by running 32 bit apps in a 64 bit environment..I'd try going 64 bit browser and 64 bit java next.

edit: here's a tip worth trying:

Hope these help.

I'm sorry, but I don't get why it would make a difference what browser I'm using while installing? It's closed when I stall anyway. I have both 32 and 64 bit Java installed. I have tried with Explorer (!), Opera and Chrome. Java have been verified to work in all browsers.

Also, that solution has been tried several times before, alphawave7. But thanks a lot for the tip :) Problem is that subsonic-service.exe and all that jazz is depended on DEP, so it's not possible to add it to the exclusion list. At least I have not figured out how to do that. Only thing I was able to add there was the installer, but that didn't help... I'm running out of ideas here :( Maybe I'm not meant to have this excellent piece of software on my computer :(

Did you run the installer as "administrator"? (Right-click on installer, then choose "Run as administrator", versus just double-clicking on it.)
