Tomcat6 memory usage on Ubuntu

Hello. I'm running subsonic 4.7 in Tomcat6 on Ubuntu 12.04. It's a low-power HTPC, with only 2GB of memory, and I'm trying to troubleshoot why my system is running out of memory sometimes. The 'java' process sometimes uses around 17% memory according to top. When I restart the tomcat6 service, it's immediately using about 13% memory. Subsonic is the only webapp I'm running. Any suggestions on how to reduce memory usage? I only have 1 regular user on subsonic, and about 10k songs.

Unfortunately what you are experiencing is rather normal. The usage you are citing in your example is actually really good as the java process is generally quite a memory hog. This app, like most java apps, really likes more memory if you can give it. I'm running 6 GB in my setup and it runs much better than when I was running just 2 GB.

As an aside, you could try different JVMs and the memory footprint may vary slightly but really I would say you are doing good if the process is only consuming 17% of your available RAM on a system with 2GB.
