Data Usage Question

This is a dumb question but can't figure out how to tell for sure, so here it is. When I connect to subsonic on my andriod device via my home's WiFi connection, is the data going straight from the computer to the phone? Or is it going out into the internet, then my phone is downloading from the net via wifi? Comcast just sent me a letter saying they are re-instituting their Data Caps again (300 gb this time) and looking at my usage meter, I've been over 300 gb for the last 3 months straight. We don't do a ton of streaming or online gaming at my house, but I do use subsonic daily to play flacs on a bluetooth speaker via my phone. I imagine that's the main data usage I do.

Is their anyway to connect directly to the subsonic server on my pc without going through the internet on my phone? I tried typing in the ip:port for the server address in the mobile app, but it told me to enter a valid url.

Though, in retrospect of typing out this post, even if I'm listening to a gig of flacs a day, that's only 30 gigs a month... I must be downloading other stuff more than I think! Especially considering I have my cache for Dsub set to 4 gigs. Still, would be nice to know if there's a way to do this.

That said, can anybody recommend a good data monitor? Maybe one that actually tells me which processes are using the data?

It depends on how you are connecting to the server. If you are connecting using your internal IP address (192.168.x.x, or 10.x.x.x), then you are NOT going over the internet.

If you are using your *.subsonic.org name, or another name through a DynDNS-type service, then you ARE going out to the internet, and back into your home connection.

I've been running the Madsonic mod for several months now, and never even come close to any "data caps" set by my ISP, so I don't see that as an issue, but you can limit the bandwidth used by Subsonic through the app, or even on the server end.

Thanks for the reply. I probably should have posted this in the Dsub forum.

Does anyone know a way to connect to my 192.168.x.x address through the Dsub app. As mentioned before, when I try to type that in as my server, it gives me a "Please enter a valid url" error. I can access it through my phone's browser, but not the app.

I just tried it and it works fine for me. Plese note that the http:// is still required.

PS: I'm not sure that that will fix anything. While doing some research it looks like the router SHOULD notice that the ip that matches the host resolves to itself, and not ever leave the network. And add on top of that that you would have to be downloading music pretty much all day every day to get those usage levels from Subsonic, I'm thinking you have something else going on. Who knows, you might be part of a botnet and all that bandwidth isn't actually you doing anything.

You probably need to put the :4040 at the end if you are using a local IP address..

Thanks again for the replies. I wasn't including the http:// in the address, that fixed it! :)

But yeah, like I said, I realized midway through typing the original post that my Subsonic data usage was only a drop in the bucket. I'll have to keep a closer eye on what I'm actually doing with my bandwidth.
