Hello,
I am seeking a brief explanation and/or a resource that will explain the functionality and the configurations choices for the "Player" menu in the Subsonic setting screen and the "player" selection dropdown in the play queue screen field. I am new to Subsonic therefore I ask that you do not make any assumptions regarding my knowledge of Subsonic, however I have do have music playing and I can access and play my library remotely through Subsonic.

Currently the player dropdown menu in the Settings screen is populated with "Player 1" and "Player 4"

The select player dropdown menu in settings is populated as follows:
"Player 1 admin" associated with Web player (I configured this selection)
"Player 2 Jack" associated with Web player (I configured this selection)
"Player 3 Jack" associated with Web player (Not sure why this entry is a duplicate of player 2)
"Player 4 admin" associated with Web Player (Not sure why entry is a duplicate of player 1)
"Player 5 Sam" associated with external player with playlist (I configured this selection)

Assistance is appreciated. Thanks

Most common cause of duplicate player entries is accessing the service from different computers, or clearing cache/cookies.

Gurutech,

Thanks for the info. So just what is the purpose and how should I configure the player entries?

Documentation on this is admittedly sparse, but gurutech is correct in that a player is auto-generated upon every access to the server, and a new one is created when access parameters don't match an existing player (eg. remote cache cleared,etc.). Configuration may be desired by admins who want to control bandwidth or transcoding options to control cpu usage, etc. Luckily, Sindre put Help symbol rollovers that assist in configuring, I'm uncertain of the efficacy of setting these parameters however, since a client can indeed 'refresh' and get a new player, over-riding the limitations set forth by the admin, but I also haven't tested it myself (if anyone tells me otherwise, please do!), as my users can do as they please on a dedicated server. If you discover anything interesting while fiddling with these settings, please share! :)

So if I understand the both of you, the "player" configurations are used by the admin to tailor Subsonic network configurations, memory, transcoding, etc, for individual users.

Thanks to you both.

Quick related question if I may: after years of using and loving subsonic, I now only appear to have Winamp option as player, even though I have many others in the config (including a new one I just set up to play in the web browser). Where am I going wrong??

Thanks in advance ;)

Just a quick update to say my install seems to have finally added 'Player41' as a web player, so we're all good again (very odd where it went though).

Thanks.
