VLC 2.1.3 web plugin broke. Is it a VLC or subsonic issue?

I have the latest version of VLC (2.1.3) installed, including its web plugins, for the latest versions of Firefox and Chrome. When selecting either of the "External player" options in the player settings, the plugin appears to hang (and in Chrome, it appears to crash). If I choose to disable the plugin, I'm prompted with an m3u download. Accepting that file and opening it will result in the appropriate playlist and VLC appears to play just fine.

Is this a VLC bug, a subsonic bug, or an error with my configuration? Is there a workaround for this issue?

Thanks!

I've tried using the latest nightlies of VLC (v 2.2.0) and while I notice some visual differences in the web plugin, I still have not gotten it to work. Any help recommending alternative browser plugins (or similar) to play flac natively would be much appreciated.
