Mac Install falling at first hurdle

I'd love to get this software set up... but I'm falling at the first hurdle.
1. I installed from subsonic-4.9.pkg. When I run Subsonic from my Applications folder, I get the headphones icon in my taskbar. "Subsonic Control Panel" does nothing, and "Open Subsonic Control Panel" opens a webpage which tells me it's unable to connect to localhost:4040
2. As recommended in the install guide, I ran the program from the command line, and got the same.
3. I checked in my Application Support folders (both in HD/Library and ~/Library) and there are no Subsonic folders in either.
Can anyone give me a clue?

Macbook Pro Retina, mid 2012
OS X 10.9.3
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
251GB Flash Storage
