Fresh install, music won't play

I'm very new to Subsonic but have a fairly good grasp of computers and networks, etc. although I must admit some of this is beyond my understanding so far. I installed the program and went through setting my router manually. The ports are reported open and everything seems to work except no music files will play. My library appears in the browser and in the app installed on my phone. If I select a file and press play in the browser or phone app it will momentarily play with no sound produced and then go to stop. I am using lossless m4a files and I hope to continue to use lossless files (any lossless type), which is the main reason I chose Subsonic.

I've explored solutions to this problem on the internet but so far have come up empty.

I have not been able to figure out how to use an external player yet.

I am using 4.9 (build 3853) and jetty-6.1.x, java 1.7.0_60, Windows 8 (60.7 MB / 137.9 MB)

My hardware platform is Windows 8.1 and the Java memory limit is 150 Mb.

The most recent log entries only describe scanning files.

Any help getting a newbie afloat would be appreciated.
