Audio focus in app misbehaving?

Postby Souldrinker » Fri Sep 05, 2014 8:53 pm

Hi, is it just me or do others have issues with the latest 4.4 update of the Android Subsonic app?

When I drive to work I usually have the following setup on my HTC One M8 (Android 4.4.3):
Car Home Ultra is set to autostart when I put the phone in the official car dock. When that starts it automatically enables bluetooth on the phone and connects to my Sony Ericsson MW600 bluetooth headset in my glove department connected to the AUX port there so I get audio to my car stereo.

I then start Subsonic and then Waze, that is Waze in the foreground to see route information and subsonic in the background. When I want to pause or skip song I just pull the notification area down and do that from there without having to switch to the app which is great.

I've set up Waze to only enable sounds for warnings (like traffic cams if I drive fast, accidents on the road, change of route etc.), not for turns etc. since I know my way to work ;-)

Before the 4.4 update of the app when Waze started to talk (like warning me when I drive to fast close to a traffic cam) it kind of lowered the music (I think) so I could hear the warning with the music playing in the background.

After the 4.4 update whenever Waze is about to tell me something instead of hearing the warning I see that the bluetooth sound is lowered to inaudible so I don't hear the waze talk. Then when I suppose that is finished it raises the volume again and starts playing the music where it left off. I see the bluetooth volume slider appear on the screen and lowering it when approaching a traffic cam fast and don't hear the warning. Then a few seconds later the bluetooth volume slider reappears and sets the volume back to maximum.

This is really annoying since I miss all the audio warnings. I suppose this is a bug in the "audio focus support" mentioned in the change log for 4.4, since I though it was supposed to make the route guidance/notification sounds easier to hear, not inaudible? Please put it back as it was or fix it so it works as announced. Or if you think I do something wrong on my side, please let me know what, because this has been working great for many years up until this weekend.

PS. I know there is a whole thread about it that is marked as resolved, but as far as I can see I didn't find any solution there and I still can't find a way to get the Subsonic app to use my external sd-card. In the 4.2/4.3.1 change logs of the app it says it has fixed issues writing to the sd card, but the "cache location" is still disabled in my settings and point to /mnt/sdcard/subsonic (which is on the internal phone memory) while my real sd-card is mounted as ext_sd. My phone is rooted and I have full control of the external sd card, why can't I change the location to use ext_sd instead?

Is it really only me that is having issues with the latest (4.4) version of the official Subsonic Android app? It's really annoying having the bluetooth volume getting lowered to a minimum each time another app is making a sound.

I don't hear Waze notifications, maps navigation guidance, mail alerts or even the ringtone when somebody calls me if I have the Subsonic app running. The whole phone just gets silent until the other app stops making sounds and then the music starts playing again and I see the volume control being lowered to a minimum when other apps make sounds and then increased again when they stop.

I just found the 4.3.1 version apk on SourceForge, so I will probably try to revert to that tonight until this is fixed, but does anyone know what the best way is to submit a bug report? I found (http://sourceforge.net/p/subsonic/bugs/), but that seems to be for Subsonic server issues?

Yes I can confirm I'm having this problem. Happens with Waze and Google Maps, tres annoying.

Let us know how your downgrade fairs?

Same issue with a bluetooth headphones and Runtatic and the training by voice. The volumen comes down when the voice starts and I can't hear it, but if I push the up buttom volume I can listen to the music and the voice until next time the voice speaks.

Can confirm the downgrade returns to the previous working condition - music and navigation voice happen at the same time - this is a better solution that total *silence* when another app wants audio priority.

Any view from Sindre on this?

I presumed I wouldn't be the first person to report this, and alas this seems to have been an issue for a while. It'd be great to get some type of confirmation that this is a known issue and an estimate as to when it might be fixed.

Thanks.

It's been over a year now since the latest update that messed up the volume everytime another app is playing audio. It seems as soon as any other app is playing audio when subsonic is playing the volume on the whole phone is getting turned down to zero until that app is ready. Sure it would be nice if the subsonic lowered the music, but I do want to hear what the other app is saying.

I guess I'm a bit lazy so rather than reverting to an earlier version or trying another app I've been disabling the sound of Waze when I'm listening to music, but still when I get mails or use other navigation apps I get these annoying silences. It seems there is a lot of alternative Android apps listed. Is this app still being worked on and do other people still use this app despite these annoyances or have you moved on and if so which app do you recommend?

I finally got tired of waiting and tried D-Sub instead and that worked perfectly in regards to the audio volume. When other apps play music (Waze, Google Maps, mail, Zombies Run etc.) they lower the music playing from subsonic and are themselves audible just like they did after the last Subsonic app update last year. Also I seem to have gotten rid of the minor audio glitches where it gets quiet for half a second every other song or so, so I'll probably stick with that for now. Too bad I've been waiting this long ;-)
