No Sonos controller found

Running Subsonic 5.2.1 on FreeNAS 9.3. When trying to use the Sonos integration, I find "No Sonos controller found" in the log and the Sonos app does not see the Subsonic service.
Can anybody help troubleshoot this?
Immediate questions:
- Does the Somos desktop app have to run? Is that what Subsonic means with "Controller"? Or does it try to talk directly to the Sonos Bridge / Boost?
- How does Subsonic discover the Sonos Controller? I'd love to exclude network level problems.
Best,
-Ralf

Same issue with Subsonic not seeing Sonos. I think it might be a UPnP issue?
Router:
Model: Nighthawk R7000
Firmware: V1.0.4.18_1.1.52
UPnP service Enabled
Both Sonos bridge and FreeNas box plugged into the router directly. No other network issues that I'm aware of.
Additional Info:
1) Turned on DLNA on my plexmedia server ( also running on my Freenas box ) and that shows up on my various devices...
2) Installed Subsonic on my Mac and the Sonos feature does work on that platform.
Subsonic Info:
Version: 5.2.1 (build 4427) – March 4, 2015
Server: jetty-6.1.x, java 1.7.0_65, FreeBSD (45.1 MB / 107.0 MB)

I can confirm that Plex runs just fine. UPnP and DLNA work seamlessly. So I guess it's an issue with how Subsonic tries to discover the Sonos Controller. I'd love if someone could shed some light non it. Trying to debug network traffic with tshark next.
