Odd/annoying playlist behaviour

I prefer to use Subsonic with an external player; in this instance, VLC, Vox or iTunes.
If I select a song to play from my library, it will download the .m3u (which is what I want) and play that song, and then every other song after it in the directory. I cannot get it to stop this behaviour and it is driving me up the wall. When I want to play a full album, I'll just hit play for that album. When I want to play a selection of songs, I'll add them to the playlist and play it, and when I want to play a single track I should be able to do that too. Under no circumstances do I want Subsonic to give me a playlist that consists of whatever the remainder of tracks in a directory after a given track are; be it one more or 1,000 more.
I've deleted players, re-made them, deleted users and remade them, and even uninstalled and reinstalled Subsonic, to no avail.
Any ideas? If there's something simple that I'm overlooking, I'd love to hear it.
