Hi All,

Not sure if this is possible or not...

I want to have say d:\albums\pink floyd

Then in that directory have the albums in 1 directory... My file naming is as follows...

artist - album - track number.mp3

pink floyd - the wall cd1 - 01.mp3 and so on...

Is this already possible or how do I need to have the albums in directories... thanking you in advance...

zomorf

All you have to do is sort your file system out

i have this: artist/album/

or: artist/album/CD1/

So you want me to have hundreds of directories... instead of less then 100...

You call that sorting my files out?

Well its up to you how you do it lol

All im saying is how iv done it and it works well in subsonic.

coz if you have albums\pink floyd in the list in subsonic in A all you will have is albums under A...

You could still have it organized the way that you have it right now (d:\albums\pink floyd\the wall\track 01.mp3).

You would just want to make sure that when you designate the music folder in Subsonic that you use "d:\albums" rather than just "d:\". Then you will have the links to all the artist folders in the left pane.

I don't see having hundreds of directories compared to say less then 100 directories... Like Pink Floyd I have the box set as I do with many other artists... Wouldn't it be easier if I could have 1 directory for pink floyd 1 for The rolling Stones etc instead of directories then subdirectories for each album... Looks @ Pearl Jam they release LIVE Albums for almost every concert they play... Or Elvis or The Beatles etc... Just with above mentioned artists you'd probably need around 300 directories... sure most would be under the 5 artists mentioned but wouldn't it be easier to have 1 directory per artist?

Just have a play about and do what is best for your needs, i just no how i have done it and it works very well with subsonic. i cant speak for anyone else but i feel its one of the best ways of doing it.

yes i do have 100's of files but then i also have a lot of music.

I think you are describing the same thing that I and donpearson are describing. A structure like d:\artist\album\track 01.mp3 would create a single directory for each artist and sub-folders for each album by that artist.

Directory or sub-directory makes no difference... I still would need 100's maybe even a thousand directories/sub-directories... I'll ask for a feature maybe... If subsonic @ the moment can't allow this so I can have 1 directory for 1 artist then maybe either subsonic ain't for me and many others... But it would be a nice feature...I'm not one for having a thousand directories on a HD... for music...

Off to the request feature forum...

Sure you can have it, but then all your tracks for one atrist will be displayed in one large list. And depending on the naming of the tracks you will need to make the track list wider than the default 30-40 characters.

Pink floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon - 04 - The Great Gig In The Sky

Is somewhat wide to display in the list, but it is possible.

Subsonic will show the folder/file layout when you navigate between artists, so whatever you chose to have as a folder structure will be what you see in the browser.

On the other hand I believe the serach feature works on the ID3 tags only.

To ease a conversion of you music collection, I can recommend to use MediaMonkey to alter the file structure. That is if you have correct ID3 tags on it. If you never have used MediaMonkey before, you have 30 days to use the advanced features before they are locked. That said, I got myself a lifetime upgrade licence since I think that is the best tool to correct ID3 tags in music files and get the files into a correct filestructure.

Personally I prefer:

artist / year - Album / Tracknumber - Trackname

That since I prefer to have the albums in chronologic order.
