Hello, I am doing something wrong.

First question, have any of you managed to connect to your video collection from android and stream it to your device? If yes then I would like to do this too.

I have been using subsonic for 5 plus years now and when I started out I had an iPhone but switched to Android 2 years ago. When I had iPhone I was able to stream some video to iOS iSub, not all but some. When I switched to Android I was never able to get that going again even though the web based player worked just fine. I do not believe I am using flash on the web interface and can confirm that the settings in subsonic are set for flv/h264 and mkv transcoding. On the web everything works perfectly but on the Android client I simply can't get any video. When I choose a video it asks me what player I would like to use and that player just tries over and over again until it eventually gives up. I have tried several player, vlc mxplayer and a number of others. Perhaps someone here can help me figure this out.

I run my subsonic instance in Ubuntu running as a VM on ESX, it has a java heap of 1800 MB, it runs on an unsigned https server but I can easily switch that to http for testing purposes. I am currently only able to access the machine remotely but that should be adequate.

I'm using windows serer 2012 and also tested on a Windows 7. Testing on Version 5.2.1. Make sure your video file encoded correctly. I was testing with HD MKV files size of 7 Gb to 16 Gb file. Streaming from the web is good. I tested on My android using the Original Subsonic for android. To get your files going, I needed to go to settings (Subsonic client on the android) and the section for video player, I put it as default. My original setting, video player was selecting mx player. When this was set, files could not be played and the client would give an error. Once I put the settings as default, I would select the movie/video file to play. a little window would pop up and I was be able to select what player I wanted. I have mx player (with extra codec installed) and VLC. So I selected the player I wanted to use both VLC and MX player worked.

Note: My files are so big in MKV, playing on the android would take a little patience. Even on my LAN network (internal), it took 5 min for the video to start playing. Same goes from outside of my network coming in. Now files in AVI (tested 200 Mb) file, it would stream right away on the android.

I'm not sure what you mean in this response. It is very confusing and I just don't understand what you are trying to say. I appreciate your attempt to help but what you wrote is very unclear to me. Perhaps you will see this and try to explain this to me again. Also I use DSub on my android if that makes a difference.

My set up is on Windows 2012 Server using Subsonic version 5.2.1

First, what video format/container are you using? My video files are in MKV and AVI

Second, make sure your client player (mx player or VLC player) on your android has the correct codecs.

Third, If you are using sindre_mehus's Subsonic app on your android, make sure to set the following setting, go into video player setting of your Subsonic app, and set as "default". I use sindre_mehus's Subsonic app and DSub app. So you may try Dsub out too.

So when you play a video in the subsonic app, it will pop up and ask what video player you would like to use (mx or VLC). Both players on my phone worked fine.

Note: if your video file is big (such as 7 GB or more), you will need to wait about 5 min or so before the video will start playing. This is from my experience. I do have smaller files, but the video format is in AVI, the size is under 1 GB, so streaming it through my subsonic app has no issue (no waiting for it to buffer).


Also you need to take into consideration that my subsonic server may be different from yours. I have 1 Gb of bandwidth going out of my network to the outside world, and inside my LAN network is also a Gig connection. So I have plenty of bandwidth to stream. As long as you are within your LAN network, then you should be able to stream your video.

I also have Subsonic version 5.3 on another server. Streaming videos through my android phone (samsung galaxy note 5) without issue. I have not tested Subsonic version 6.0.
