Delay in streaming of mp3

I've got a curious problem with mp3 streams, there are three scenarios:
1. flac/m4a file transcoded to mp3 -> no delay
2. mp3 file transcoded to mp3 -> no delay
3. mp3 file not transcoded -> delay
In my setup subsonic is behind a nginx proxy, it seems that when playing a plain mp3 file the player buffers a much larger chunk before the playback starts.
In the scenario where I transcode the mp3 file to mp3 (using the default transcode settings) this behavior is not observed.
Any insight to what could cause this would be greatly appreciated.
