trouble setting up networking on new Ubuntu server

Hi all,
Wondering if anyone can help. I have just setup a new media & file server running Ubuntu 16.04 and installed SS with no problems however when I try to connect from outside of my home network I get

"Connection failed
The server could be joined but required additional information could no be retrieved
Make sure you entered a valid BubbleUPnP Server connection URL and not your Media Server or NAS URL"

I have tried connecting using my static ip address and the .subsonic.org address but get the same result and ufw is allowing incoming connections on 4040 & 80

I'm sure this is something silly I've missed but I'm going round in circles.

Doing some more checking I've found even on my internal network I can only connect with the firewall (ufw) turned off allowing ports 4040 & 80 through doesn't work.
No change on accessing from outside, still get the same error message.
Can anyone offer some advice please?

check out portforward http://portforward.com/ for help on opening up ports on your router.

http://www.canyouseeme.org/ is really good for checking to see if there's a service operating on an open port. Good for testing when you're at home, and need to see if your server is accessible from outside your network (not at home).
