Setting Up Subsonic on VPN (PIA: Private Internet Access)

Hey guys! Hopefully one of you can help me. I recently installed PIA: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ and it broke my Subsonic server, which from my very rudimentary knowledge of VPN and Subsonic servers, is because Subsonic needs a static IP, but VPN is constantly changing it. My ports are forwarded and have been using Subsonic for years without VPN, but this time in which we live is calling to be more secure. Is there a work-around to get Subsonic back up and running?

You're gonna have a tough time with this. I don't think it's so much the static IP that's an issue, because you can use a DDNS host (like no-ip.com) to give your dynamic IP a hostname (e.g., myserver.no-ip.com) that will always point to whatever IP you get assigned. I think port forwarding is the larger issue. You can read about it here:

https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess. ... on-my-VPN-

Basically, if you enable the port forwarding option, PIA will assign you a random port each time you connect.

You would then have to configure Subsonic to use that port, somehow. I don't know if changing the port is an option in Subsonic or not.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, it seems the only way this would be able to work is if I could change the standard port that subsonic uses from 4040 to any port of my choosing. I'm not even sure if that is possible. Any one else have ideas?

How are you connecting to the VPN service? As in where is the VPN client running on your local network? Your Subsonic server, your router?

Assuming you are using Windows as the OS on your server. The port can be changed in the Subsonic Control Panel. You will find this on the computer running Subsonic in the system tray.

I'm actually on a Mac, and when I pull up the control panel, it does not give me an option to enter my own port. How can I do so?

To change the port number, Java memory settings or other startup parameters, edit /Applications/Subsonic.app/Contents/Info.plist.

I'm wondering if anyone got this sorted out? I just started using PIA and am having the same problem. I'm on a Mac as well and am familiar with port forwarding on the router.

I am on Torguard and do my port forwarding and VPN through my Asus router using DD-WRT (don't get me started on Merlin). I had to have my VPN provider set up a static IP for me based solely on Subsonic. Has anyone else found a way to make the connection with VPN without having to have a dedicated server? I'm considering changing my VPN provider but if this issue would still persist then it's not really worth changing providers. I am running my Subsonic instance on my NAS and even if I turn the VPN service off I can't access Subsonic outside my home network. It would be cool if this sort of issue could be dealt with so we could listen to our music anywhere.
