ideal max memory settings

I have sort of a general question about the MAX_MEMORY setting. I imagine the optimum setting depends on a number of things, but I'm curious what those things would be in order of importance... what should I take into consideration when setting the max java heap on my own server? (I'm assuming higher isn't necessarily better) CPU? RAM? music library size?

are there things in the log file that I can look out for to guide that setting?

I guess it's a lot of trial and error to get the optimized setting.
I would suggest reading up a bit on it if you really want to get the perfect result.

For instance Sun published a white paper, a while ago but still, which explains some parts of it:

Or perhaps somebody else has the scoop on what to determine the setting based on. Still, it would depend on both HW but also what other SW is running on the same server. The setting should be different on to identical HW-server whereas one is dedicated and the other is not.
