I have been looking through the forum and can't seem to find anything past version 4 on how to disable/remove the chat function for all users.

Any pointers?

It can't be done for all users but in Settings > Personal you can unmark Show chat messages.
Sadly it's a per user setting .You can't set it as a default setting for all users.
So if you really want the chat function gone, you have to dig into the code yourself or post it on the Feature Request forum.
Perhaps Sindre might like the idea.
