Port Forward or outside network access problem

Postby solavirtus » Fri Dec 15, 2017 3:57 pm

Hello all. I've had quite a time lately trying to figure out what's going on with my server set up. It all of a sudden just stopped working all together, and I think it was a database issue, so I did a clean uninstall and wipe, and reinstalled. Everything seems to be working now when I'm on my home network, but I can't access it when I'm away. I think it may be a port forwarding issue, but I can't get anywhere beyond that. Thanks for any help and suggestion folks can provide!!

Here's the summary:

Problem Description: Unable to access subsonic server away from home network, either mobile app or web. In Settings > Network it says "Status: Failed to create port forwarding. See log for details." From the Android app, the error I get when I try to test the network connection for my server when I'm not on the home network is : "Connection Failure. DIdn't understand the reply. Please check the server address." I currently have the "Automatically configure your router UPnP/NAT-PMP" box checked in the Settings > Network options.
Troubleshooting Steps: I have gone back and forth with manual port forwarding and disabling the Automatically configure option. When I set up port forwarding how I think is correct, and disable the Subsonic automatic configuration option, it doesn't get me anywhere. I have checked that the port is open (it is).
Playback Application and version: Using the web and Android app.
Subsonic Version: 6.1.3 (build e408c9) – October 31, 2017
Server Version: jetty-6.1.x, java 1.8.0_151, HSQLDB, Windows 10 (95.3 MB / 194.2 MB)

I would advice against using the "Automatically configure your router" option in Subsonic.
For a portforwarding to work properly it's neccesary that your server always has the same local ipadress.
So that's the first thing to look at.
You can either set this in the network settings In Windows 10 or by configuring your router to always assign the same ip-adress to your Subsonic-server.
Once you are sure that your server has a fixed ipadress you must manually assign the correct port to your server.
Before doing that I would check which port Subsonic is really using, by clicking the tray icon, switching to the settings tab and check which port is indicated.
Next I would set this portforwarding in your router. If the portforwarding already exists, delete it, reboot your router and set it again.
Reboot the Subsonic server and check if it still has the same ipadress. Log in to Subsonic on the local machine and check the Networkstatus under Settings > Network.
If it says Status: Port forwarding disabled and Status: Succesfully registered webaddress than everything should work as intended.

Thanks toolman and alphawave7, I think I got the problem fixed!

I had a static IP for the server, so that wasn't the issue. I switched to a different port at alpha's suggestion and disabled the automatic config option in subsonic options, and now it's working. Thanks all!
