how internet radio works?

forgive for my ignorance, but I put the url of the streaming in the section of radio and tv on the internet but does not play or work anything, if someone could explain the operation of the radio I would appreciate it.

can you give the specific station information here (the web page as well as the streaming url)?

also some stations block independent players from accessing, and don't always give an alternate/warning sound. E.g., Radionomy stopped working but it at least says "go listen on radionomy.com" instead.
