trouble with podcasts (permission denied) FreeNAS

Postby voodooutt » Fri Apr 03, 2020 1:08 am

I pretty much know this has something to do with the permissions, but I do not know where to start.

Installed Subsonic from the FreeNAS GUI. Jail got created automatically. I've mounted a few folders into the Subsonic Jail. I can see all of the music that's been mounted through the Subsonic management console and my android app (can play).

Now, when I add a podcast, when it tried to DL, I get error inside the podcast: /podcasts_1/The Joe Rogan Experience/p1452.mp3 (Permission denied)

What needs to be changed?

In User settings every user must be allowed to admin the podcast, may be that simple failure? Only the admin has the right by default ...

Edit, also the folder for the podcast must have the right to write to

Yes, this is what I am trying to figure out in FreeNAS - trying to have subsonic have permissions in these folders.

That User and the group that is running Subsonic, must have access to the Folder, the string should be something like
chown -R User:Group /Folder/Subfolder

(this might be slightly different because FreeNAS is an Linux Clone)
Imho your question is better asked in an FreeNAS Forum, because Jails and so on.

Finally got this figured out. All about permissions. I am using FreeNAS 11.3 U1

When I accessed the share through windows, I checked the GID/UID (in this case 844)

Then I had to create a group, Subsonic and a user subsonic, both of them with GID/UID of 844

In the Subsonic group, I added subsonic as amember

ACL permissions in the share added user subsonic.

pesky pesky PERMISSIONS.

I have had this up and running for 4-5 days now.

I went to add a new folder full of music inside of the already shared (inside of Subsonic) and the shared/mirrored folders in my FreeNAS box. Refreshed database/etc. but Subsonic refuses to see the newly added folder and contents. Wondering what I can do?!

It's a good idea to open a new thread for a new question.
Anyway I guess it is the same problem as before.
If user A is installing subsonic and creating all the folders with the music and User B is creating inside the Music folder a new folder, User A has no acccess unless you say User A has the right to do so.
That is Linux and security, because multi User System. Windows is doing the same thing in Pro or Server Systems, with different Users. Now NAS has a slightly different behavior and other names, but in fact it is the same.
It is not allowed to spy in foreign folders ;-)
If you are having admin/root rights and creating a folder, no one has access. Thats an often failure because most Windows Users are always Admin.

Again, thanks for the help and reply.

I did not change the permissions for the folder. I did create another new folder though. That other new folder showed up in the subsonic list. now, the only way I was able to get the other mentioned folder and corresponding music to be indexed was to create another same named folder inside of it... can't explain it, but when a folder inside of a folder of the same name is created it can be seen. So, for now, the problem is solved.
