Online Server Installation

Hello,

This is probably an easy question, but I was confused when I reached the download page and began to explore each download type. Basically I want to install Subsonic on my online server. The music files that I have are on my online server, and I would like to configure Subsonic so users on different computers can log-in and stream the music.

How do I go about getting this set up, and what download pack should I begin with.

Thanks!

Hi jazzman0088,

What you want is what you get with Subsonic regardless of which version you choose. It's simply a matter of how you wish to run it on your server. If you don't have a preference it's usually easiest to go with the standalone version as you then do not have to bother with Tomcat and such.

Edit: Forgot to mention that if your server is Windows of some sort ( server 2003, home media server etc. ) then it's probably easier with the windows installer.

Good luck and I hope you come to love subsonic as the rest of us do :)

PS: Be sure to check out the tutorials section of the forum for tips on setting up your server.

jigsaw,

Thanks a million for your quick response and help! It is much appreciated.

I installed Subsonic via the windows installer. I think everything looks ok, but I believe it is all run through my personal computer (localhost). Do I need to upload files via FTP to my online web server to get this working online?

Thanks again!

EDIT: OK, as I'm looking into this some more (and I am really inexperienced in this area) I am not sure if this is going to work. Do I need to configure my router to have outside access, and is Subsonic basically run from a local machine always? Basically I need something that is entirely online (a script that can be uploaded to an online server). I really would like Subsonic to work as the interface looks spectacular. Ideally I would like to mimic Subsonic's Demo, but I am not sure how this is accomplished--possible some configurations with a router, which I do not think I want to deal with.

Thanks

If you want to run it online and not on a local machine then you need to have a server available on which you can install it and run it. You can for instance purchase a hosting service from a provider of your choosing. It seems to me thought that most people here is using Subsonic from a server in their local network.

And yes, if you choose to run it locally the router need to have outside access.
