I'm running Windows XP on my desktop and Android on my phone. I downloaded Subsonic for Android and Windows yesterday and after installing, I got stuck.

I can connect to the Subsonic demo through the Android app and can listen to any of the songs posted there. I can open the web page on my desktop through http://localhost but I can't access the music on my desktop through the Android app.

On my desktop app, the port is set to 80. I've also tried using the Android app to locate http://localhost:80, but I get the same error: Connection failure. localhost/127.0.0.1:80

I've tried changing the port in the desktop app (to 8080, 9000, 9001) and then again in the Android app, but I get no further than the error message.

If I check my IP address and then enter that into the Android app, I get Connection failure. Socket is not connected.

Any suggestions?


P.S.: I would also second the creation of a user's guide. This looks like a very cool app, but also the least intuitive I've seen in the Android market.

If your desktop computer is hooked up to a router to connect to the internet did you set up port forwarding for your router/computer in your router's settings?

For anyone else who has this problem:
My desktop is physically connected to a modem (Netopia 3347W) that is also a wireless router that I use for my Android phone when I'm home.

I'm not familiar with port forwarding, so I looked it up, and I'm probably still confused about it. The site portforward.com says I needed to create a static IP address first. Since my router says I'm currently using a dynamic IP type, I followed the directions and set up a static IP. Then I logged into my router (which I hear is usually located at 192.168.1.1) to create a NAT configuration. On my router's web utility, this was done by navigating to Advanced Setup->Configure->NAT. I clicked on Define Custom Service, chose Port Forwarding: Range of Ports, then typed in a unique name to remind me this is for Subsonic. I set the Global Port Range to 9001-9001 and Base Host Port to 9001. Chose TCP and clicked next. Back in the NAT configuration, I found the Subsonic name I'd just created in the drop-down box and clicked enable for the static IP address I had just created. On my Android app, I set my server address to http://[the new IP address I set up]:9001 and I was then able to connect.
