Any experience using MP3FS with Subsonic?

Postby flacflac » Mon Jan 11, 2010 7:23 am

Hi everyone,

my collection is entirely in FLAC, but I often times run into compatibility issues with some devices when not using Subsonic.

I read about MP3FS which uses the FUSE system to display a virtual "mp3" directory for each directory of FLAC files and only when accessing those virtual mp3s are the FLACs actually transcoded. What I'm wondering is if anyone has any experience using this with Subsonic, and how it behaves when being indexed for the Subsonic search.

The transcoding in Subsonic is great, but an option to download those transcoded files and not just stream them would be amazing. MP3FS might be a workaround.

Any help appreciated! :)

Hi Sindre,

I installed Ubuntu and got a test setup to work where I have the FUSE file system running displaying 'virtual' .mp3 files for all the FLAC files in a given folder.

Basically, the file system looks like this:

/Music/Artists/D/Dylan, Bob/1976 Desire/

Contains FLACs, Folder.jpg etc.

/MusicMP3/Artists/D/Dylan, Bob/1976 Desire/

Contains identically named MP3s derived from the original folder, but not taking up any (well, very little) physical space, as these files are only generated 'just-in-time' when accessed,i.e. downloaded or listened to. Tags can still be read from these files - tags are extracted from the FLACs, just the music part of the MP3 is not there.

What I would like to implement is a function so that a user can hit DOWNLOAD in Subsonic while browsing the FLAC file foldertree (mp3 tree would not be visible to the user). Yet instead of zipping up the current folder or supplying the user with the file requested, the MP3 version would be accessed and sent out. Since the path is identical but for the initial folder and the file type (.mp3 instead of .flac) I think it would only need a tiny modification in the script that controls this download function.

Could you help me out here? Where would I find this function?

Thank you again for Subsonic! :)
