Hello!
I see a lot of instructions for people with routers. I do not have a router and am trying to set up on MAc OS x with access from my Android smartphone.

I have Subsonic localhost running on my source computer at home and have located my music. I cannot access remotely from any desktop computers getting error: 'cannot find server'

I cannot access from subsonic app on my smartphone...i am getting error : 'connection failure. operation timeout'.

Do i have to setup any port forwarding since I do not use a router at home?

I have obtained my internal Ip address from a website i cant remember the exact name (im at work now), but i just saw a post that said i should use ipchicken, and get external ip. Is that the problem?

Thanks!

Hey DopEsthetic,

what exactly do you have? Just a cable modem? You won't be able to connect due to your OS firewall, but turning that off would not be a wise idea, as you'd expose your whole system to the internets... .

You will need to get a router in order to properly forward certain ports and to keep things secure. You could alternatively set up your OS firewall to allow traffic to go through whatever port you're running your installation, but again, kind of painful, non-scalable and unsafe.

Keep in mind that you most likely don't have a static IP - in that case you would also need to use a dynamic DNS service to be able to access your music at the same address all the time. There are tools that run in the background which can take care of updating the DNS, but all these things would be much easier if you forked out 20 Dollars and got yourself a router. :)

ff

Thanks a million. I even tried opening the ports and that didn't work. I'll just get a router!
