Symlink Directory Structure for e.g. Browse by Genre

Hello Board,

I'm new to Subsonic, and really liking it so far. One stumbling block for me is not being able to browse by genre, etc. as is a common functionality with other music library managers.

A thought I had was to write some scripts that would build out a directory tree of symlinks for this purpose. e.g. At the toplevel have a "Genres" tree that contains folder for different genres, and then symlinks within those to actual albums, etc.

How would this interact with the search indexing? Lots of redundant work and duplication?

Thanks,

- Daniel

I have never tested how subsonic responds to symbolic links, but why don't you give it a shot and tell us? What OS are you running? An alternative way to do this would probably be using a FUSE file system on linux that basically mirrors directories based on tags, although that might end up being a tad more work to implement... . :)

You might like to see my implementation of symbolic links from MediaMonkey.

http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... =2&t=49774

This takes MM playlists and produces a linux script that creates symbolic links to represetn the playlists as folder/file structures.
