Set Up Help for an OLD person

Please be as patient as possible. Please answer this in terms that a caveman would understand. I'm old and trying to learn so terms that are general to you might be giberish to me.

I downloaded Subsonic on my Vista PC, changed passwords, set up music file location and they all poped up so I know I did that right. I changed the playlists location to my location on my C drive c://users/myname/music/playlists

I have everything for admin set with a check mark

Now I think my problem starts. I have my web address set up as a successful web address but the test timesout. The router is set to Auto but it says no router found. I'm assuming I have to do Port forwarding on my router. I have Uverse and the router is a 2Wire 3800HGV-B. I can't find anything on port forwarding on the settings. When I searched Google, the pics they show of the screen are the old screen I used to get but the screen I get now at 192.168.1.254 is different and I can't find anything other than in wireless settings to allow devices by Mac address so I entered my iPhone wireless address.

On my PC I can play songs. On my iphone I entered the web address I created, the admin user name and the new password. It logs on ok (it played the test page before I changed it all). I press the music icon at the bottom and it connects and brings me to a Playlists page but nothing is on it. I do have the right server selected.

What am I missing? Isn't it supposed to be the playlists from my PC? I use Windows Media Player to do my playlists.

All I can figure is that since it's not showing a router in the network settings, that something is wrong.

Any help???

One step closer.

Maybe I have most of thesetting right.

I went back to the iPhone and opened the app. Pressed the music icon and got the empty Playlists page. I went back to the main page and pressed the Jazz/Saz icon and got Artists Index search. I press a letter, say D and get Play Queue Cancel. I press Play and get Max specified playlist of 50 reached.

How do I know what songs it is loading, How do I switch it to Albums instead of artists and How to I increase the limit?

I'll keep looking but thanks.

When you say playlist, are you pointing Subsonic to the folder that the actual music files are stored in? The *.mp3 *.flac etc files?

Subsonic does not read playlists as far as I know, and even if it does, the folder it needs is the folder that has the actual songs.

On Windows Vista or 7, this is normally stored in C:\Users\yourname\Music

hi,
i could make out 1 possible problem from your post:
for subsonic to be able to read them, playlists have to be PLS or M3U format, unless windows media player can save lists in these formats, you have to use something different to either convert your existing lists or make new ones.

also, i didnt quite get the meaning of your last sentence
All I can figure is that since it's not showing a router in the network settings, that something is wrong.

the network setting of what, and where? (vista, subsonic, ...?)
but its probably totally unrelated to your playlist problem.

this is not the case. subsonic reads the specified playlist folder and lists all M3U and PLS files in the playlist page. playlists need to have absolute paths to where the music is stored. only in the case that the music folder and playlist folder are one and the same, can the paths in the plalist file be relative and THEN music and plalist files have to be in the same folder.

Oh, I see. Thanks for explaining. :)

Thanks for the help

When I was talking about the router settings, I was reading the settings in the Subsonic page under the Network tab. that seems all fixed.

Here is what I have now. In Subsonic on my PC, I opened a "CD" from my HD and selected all of the songs and saved them as a playlist. They now show up on my iPhone and play.

I'm a bit confused by a few of the replies. Unless I'm reading wrong, it sounds like the actual MP3 's and the playlist for them have to be stored in the same folder. I created a playlist in Subsonic, named it and stored it in a folder called c://playlists since that was Subsonics default I made a folder in my C drive to save the playlists. My actual MP3 files are on an external HD called A://Music and B://Music. So the files and the playlists are on 2 different drives but they played on my iPhone.

Now my question is, do I have to go back and create a playlist for every "album" of my music (which sounds like a pain) or can I somehow use the playlists I have? If I can use them do I have to copy everyone of them to a different folder for Subsonic to find?

Got it now

Hey what can I say! I'm old!
I think I got it all now. I don't even like playlists, I like to play a whole album and I figured out why I couldn't see them. I was pressing on the arrow instead of the letter. Now I can find the album and play them. This is the greatest program. Now I don't have to load every song to my iPhone.

I've only had the phone for 3 days so I'm learning. thanks for all the help.
