Missing songs, help?

Run down is brief: I switched from Windows 7 to Linux Mint 8. In the process, and with Simplify Media shutting down anyway, I decided I'd need to convert to a new media streaming service. I had considered Ampache, which is in some ways more developed than Subsonic, but I was absolutely sold by the iSub app. The big typography and large album art is amazing, and after some careful consideration I had figured the file/folder structure of Subsonic would be better for managing a large collection.

However, I've had a few problems getting this going. First I had to retag and rename a fair portion of music due to Subsonic not recognizing any of my files using unicode characters. Korn, german bands, etc. Now, I'm almost positive I changed any such file names and tags to standard english and yet I'm missing 17 songs.

Is there any sort of logging by Subsonic that can easily I identify these songs?

Otherwise, I fear my conversion may be short lived.

edit: (For example, I have the complete Beethoven sonatas, as done by Wilhelm Kempff with German labelling in free lossless. This was a travesty to let go.)

there is always the subsonic.log, you could go through there and scan for errors matching yours. its huge but comprehensive.

I think the problem is you switched to Linux. Kudos for trying...but this day in age it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to run Linux on a personal home computer.
These songs don't have any DRM on them do they?

You could compare user/group settings with folders/songs that do show up.

Ehhh... not to start a flamewar but I'd suggest the opposite. In this day and age it does not make sense to run Windows on a personal home computer as you'll be fighting all the worms and viruses and trojans and drive-by malware and other such scrap while your Linux-equipped neighbor has no such problems.

Subsonic is a server app written in Java. Have a look at which server platform dominates the Java market. It is not Windows...

Linux is as 'ready for the desktop' as Windows is. In many ways it is better suited for personal desktop applications, eg. the integral OS and application update service which is common on Linux is nothing but a dream on Windows.

Thanks for all of the help. I've found that is was more unicode problems. The Ae for Aenima (Album by Tool) along with a temperature-degree sign in another song.

This unicode issue is a bother but only an annoyance, my stay with you people will certainly continue.
