iPhone help

I've finally got everything working (just got the iphone and subsonic) but I ran into a snag. I searched iphone on here and most everything is when the app first started.

I have no problem when I'm on WIFI on the iphone but when I go to 3G it can't hook up to subsonic and tells me to check the connection.

Any ideas?

Your app is Wifi only. If you're jailbroken, 3G Unresistrictor from Cydia will do the job of tricking the app to work over 3G. If not, you're limited to Wifi. One of the apps my be enabled for 3G playback soon, check back in a week.

Thanks. I know this isn't a Subsonic question, but do you know if jailbreaking the phone will still allow it to be used on itunes to sync other app you buy and your PC applications?

Yes, it does. Jailbreaking doesn't inherently change any of the end-user functionality of your phone. Typically, Cydia will be installed for you to give you access to apps refused by Apple for various reasons.

Amongst those apps are several that trick wifi-only apps into thinking theyre on wifi when theyre not. 3G Unresistrictor is probably the best.

Happen to know which jailbreak will work the the latest firmware updates and an MC model iphone? I tried blackra1n rc3 and it won't do it. From my searches a lot of people have the same issue. Like a fool I paid $25 for blackra1n and then found out it was free. Waiting for a refund.

Which iPhone app are you using? Z-subsonic or iSub?

If you are using iSub, previous to version 2.0 which was just released last night, 3G was restricted because Apple rejected the app when I included it. Version 2.0 now includes full 3G support, so no need to Jailbreak to get that functionality anymore.

If you are using Z-Subsonic, it had 3G support already, so the problem may have been (and my still be) that you are trying to connect to your Subsonic server using a local IP address on your network, so when you hop onto 3G it can no longer be found.

Thanks. Was this person wrong that said
"Your app is Wifi only. If you're jailbroken, 3G Unresistrictor from Cydia will do the job of tricking the app to work over 3G. If not, you're limited to Wifi. One of the apps my be enabled for 3G playback soon, check back in a week.

I'll gladly get yours if it works on WIFI and 3G.

You said "If you are using Z-Subsonic, it had 3G support already, so the problem may have been (and my still be) that you are trying to connect to your Subsonic server using a local IP address on your network, so when you hop onto 3G it can no longer be found."
Can you tell me exactly what I would need to change and where to get the 3G to work or is it one or the other with subsonic?
Thanks. I'm not very good at this but trying to learn.

I think he assumed you were using iSub when you said it wouldn't work on 3G (although luckily that's no longer a problem). Z-Subsonic should work just fine over 3G. What URL or IP are you telling Z-Subsonic to connect to (you can PM me if you don't want to post it openly)?

I did a PM with you but I thought I'd post here also in case you didn't get the PM...
Thanks for the help.

Here's what I have.

On my PC: I open Subsonic at http://localhost and sign in. Under Music Folders I set all of my folders, they show up fine. Under Users, I set admin as the user with a new password and checked all of the boxes and saved it. Under Networking, I checked Auto configure Router and port 80 but status under that says No Router Found (I have Uverse, 2Wire Router and they've changed the Firmware recently so you can't do Port Forwarding, that I can find, just allow things such as games). I checked Access Server over Internet and typed in http://******.subsonic.org , tested it and got...Status: ******.subsonic.org is registered, but could not connect to it. (ConnectTimeoutException). The other settings I did not do.

On my iPhone, for both ISUB and Z SUB, I used settings and typed in admin as the user, my password which I set up on the PC, and the address I showed you above. On Zsub if I try to search with 3G I get this ...Unable to connect to Subsonic Server. Please insure that you have an active internet connection and your server settings are correct. On Isub the sample set up works fine. I do the settings for me and use the same admin, password, and above address and the message I get is...either the sub sonic URL is incorrect or you are connected to WIFI but do not have internet access. On both programs, if I turn on my WIFI on the phone, they work fine. I'm assuming that you have to be on your own network for the wifi to work? I was at a baseball game yesterday and was fooling around with this. I was using the ballparks free WIFI and it wouldn't work there.

Any help you could give me would be appreciated. I'd even call you if you wanted to walk me through this. The thought of loading my music onto the phone is a pain.

Here's the message I replied with, figured I'd keep the conversation here so others can benefit from the information.

I'm not quite sure why that subsonic.org address is working for you even on your local network, but it seems like the problem lies in your router configuration. It looks like Subsonic was not able to get your router to open the necessary port automatically. That's why, when you're on your local Wifi network it works, but as soon as you're outside your network, your router is doing exactly what it's supposed to do without proper configuration -- it's not allowing the connection. I think with your particular model router, you're going to have to go in and open the port yourself. It's probably in that games area of the router settings that you were talking about. And you are probably going to have to change Subsonic's port to something nonstandard instead of port 80 as they may be blocking that.

Since I don't have that router, it's hard for me to tell you exactly where you need to go to make that change. But in general do this: 1. change subsonic's port to something random like 8888 2. log into your router and find where they allow you to enable online games that need port forwarding 3. forward port 8888 to your computer. Then it should be working.

Sorry that's as detailed as I can get without seeing the router in front of me. If you run into issues getting this to work, PM more specific details about the options on the games page in your routers config. I might be able to help more if I know what you're looking at.

Good luck! :)

Just in case anyone else has this same issue and comes to this thread, it did turn out to be a port forwarding issue on his router. Specifically, it wasn't set to forward the port for Subsonic. Once he manually set it up in the "games" area of his router (many routers have an apps & games section or something similar instead of just saying port forwarding), it's working fine now.
