Can't connect via Android

Postby JTravisRolko » Tue Apr 06, 2010 2:45 pm

Every time I try, I get the message "A network error occurred." The server address, username and password are correct. I don't know what else to do. I don't have wi-fi, but I thought I didn't necessarily need it for Subsonic. I thought this app was for streaming music from anywhere, no matter what kind of connection.

Can you connect to the test server? Can you connect to your server from a computer while you're on a different network than the one your server is on?

I can connect via the demo, but not to my (name).subsonic.org address.

"Can you connect to your server from a computer while you're on a different network than the one your server is on?"

I don't actually own a server. Is that the misunderstanding? I just have a desktop computer and an Android phone.

What chris.h means by server is the server software you presumably have running on your desktop which you're intending to stream your music from...which for the convenience of discussion you'll normally see referred to as a server.

Is the necessary port being forwarded in your router's settings? And are you certain that you can connect to the port subsonic runs on via your phone?

Also, maybe a dumb question, but if you haven't donated, I don't think the *.subsonic.org address you're using will work. If you have donated, disregard that.

Ensure you've got the full path in your Android app settings as well...if you need a /subsonic appended to the end, or you're leaving off the port from the URL, those things will always throw an error when trying to connect.

What server software? Subsonic?

As I said, I don't have wi-fi, so I don't have a router. I thought Subsonic could be used remotely over 3G.

I haven't donated, but my Subsonic "localhost" site says that address should be valid until May 3. I wanted to actually try this app out before I donate.

I am having the same problem, although I do have wi-fi and it works fine on my home wi-fi connection, which is the same network where my server
resides.

I can connect to both the demo server and my server using the wi-fi but only the demo using 3G.

Very frustrating. I too am not planning to donate until I figure out if this works.

same problem

Postby tomosius » Mon Nov 22, 2010 12:48 am

i have the exact same problem. I donated long time ago though, so I do have my name.subsonic.org address. How do I include my port number in my android app? do I type http://name.subsonic.org:4040 ? I tried that and I still get a network error. Works over same wifi, but not on phone's 3G connection.
My server is on ubuntu 10.10.
Someone please help, thanks.

So i know that this isn't the prettiest drawing but i hope that it helps. If you notice in the picture that everything connects through the linksys router to connect to the internet including the phone if the wifi is turned on otherwise it connect directly to the internet though your phone company. If your phone works with the wifi turned on but doesn't work with the wifi turned off then you have to make some changes on your router to forward the ports that you are using for subsonic.

The reason why you have to do this is because all your devices behind the router share one WAN ip. This is called "NAT"
So when you connect to xxxx.subsonic.org from outside your home you more or less have to explain to the router what computer is hosting the subsonic application.

--- Lets try the easy way first.

Almost all routers support UPnP. It may require you to log into your router's web interface and check a box called enable UPnP. You will also need to go into the subsonic web interface and enable UPnP also under settings>network. Then check a box called automatically configure your router to allow incoming connections.

This doesn't always work but try it out first.

--- The more difficult way.

Is to set your computer that's running subsonic to a static IP address and then log into your router's page and port forward the ports that you are using for subsonic to the same one that subsonic is running on.
Here is a couple tools which may be needed.
http://portforward.com/ << Shows you how to port forward your router.
http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ << Tests to see if your port is open on your router.

--- Android Settings.
Server Address = http://wan_ip_address:port or http://name.subsonic.org

Good Luck
