Frustrated

Postby sk8russ » Tue Apr 20, 2010 4:21 am

This is seriously the most frustrating thing to try and figure out. I want it to work so badly and think it seems awesome but I simply cannot figure it out and can't get a single aspect of this to work. I have a d-link dir615 router, I have gone to dyndns.com and created a host name, and I have gone into my routers settings and done what I believe is correctly setup port forwarding. As far as port forwarding, it asked for my internet IP, I entered it. It asked for port numbers in two spots, where I entered 8080 into both. I am not able to access the subsonic page in my browser, let alone on my android phone, which is the primary purpose I am trying to get this to work for. I have searched this forum and there is so much information but I have been unable to find anything that easily outlines what I am trying to do. If anyone has suggestions I would appreciate it greatly. I don't have a complete understanding of what things like port forwarding even mean, but I am doing my best to not give up.

PLEASE HELP! :D

No worries, we'll get this sorted out quickly. You're already halfway there if you are able to log into your router and have a dyndns account. When you say you entered your internet IP on the port forwarding page, what IP address did you use? Also, are you positive that the port for your Subsonic install is 8080? (just covering all bases)

With a few more specifics you'll be up and running in no time.

On the port forwarding page, I used the IP that comes up at the address www.whatismyip.com

If I double click on on the Subsonic control panel on my task bar and click the setings tab, 8080 is the number next to "port number." Is that what you meant?

No, this ip is the one you'll use to connect to your subsonic server.

In the port forwarding page, you'll need to put the ip of your computer inside your home network : if you don't know it, you can
1. launch a console (windows key + r and type cmd in the Run dialog)
2. in the console, type ipconfig, that should display a few lines, including one with your IP address.

So put our local ip (probably something like 192.168.0.xxx) in the port forwarding page with ports 8080 in the two spots.
Then you should be able to use http://the_ip_you_got_from_the_web_page:8080 to access to your server

I did exactly what caligari said and I was able to access the subsonic admin page. Now, what do I do in order to use subsonic on my android phone; specifically on 3g, not just on wifi? I am able to use subsonic on my android phone when I am at home on my wifi network. I haven't had success using it when I am out and about. I appreciate any help I can get!

Thanks!

Are you able to access the server on a computer outside of your network using the IP that comes up at the address www.whatismyip.com , by pointing to http://THE_IP_FROM_WHATISMYIP:8080 ?

If the answer is yes, then the exact same address should work with the andoid app too.

If you used this address but on a computer within your home network, then maybe your server is still not accessible from outside...

Outside of the network.

Would pointing my android browser to that address with the wifi turned off count as a computer outside ofthe network? That's what I'll try and let you know the results if so.

Yes, I think that it would count : the android with wifi turned is not part of your home network, so it would need to go through the router and the port forwarding to get to your server.

OK that's cool, it actually worked. One more question though...what was the dyndns for? It hasn't come up yet as part of this discussion...

dyndns.com is simply a bridge between your Ip address and a url... meaning, to access your home based subsonic, you would normally have to type in something like "123.123.123.123:3234", but with dyndns, you can set it up so you can type in "subsonic.ath.cx:1234" instead, something a bit more easy to remember.

Plus the dyndns software (or subsonic when you use a *.subsonic.org address) tracks changes in your IP address (home Internet IPs change all the time) so that your URL always points to your home computer. that's the biggest advantage of the URL.

Dude, no offense but: you do know there's a manual out there? Page 71 of the manual you can download here...

http://www.dlink.com/products/?tab=3&pi ... R-615_revE

has all the info you need. Under TOOLS --> DDNS you can set up a dynamic DNS account. Alternatively: register Subsonic via donating and you'll be able to use a subsonic.org address for your server.

Enjoy.

Manual

Postby sk8russ » Thu Apr 22, 2010 2:46 pm

I did not think to look in the manual for help with this issue. Thanks for the link though, it did point me to the d-link free ddns service. My question now, which I was unable to find on that site is, what do I put in the new IP address box? I can create a free host using the d-link ddns service and it ask for a host name where I just made one up, it gives me my current ip address and then there is a box that says new ip address and I don't know what to put there.

Once I figure that out, what should happen when I type in myhostname.dlinkddns.com into my browser?
