Playback via iSub iPhone app stops after a couple seconds??

Postby m021478 » Wed May 26, 2010 3:07 pm

I just tried playing back one of my U2 albums, and each song begins playing just fine, but then after a couple seconds, it cuts off and skips to the next song?

Any idea why this is happening, and any idea how I can go about fixing it?

That thread seems to be monitored very well by the creator of iSub

Thanks kermit22, it is hard for me to keep up with all of the different iSub threads scattered around the forum, especially when I'm doing 10+ hour coding days getting the next version ready ;)

@m021478: are you still experiencing this problem? Those kind of weird audio streamer bugs are hard for me to guess the root cause of when I don't have the device in my hand nor access to your Subsonic library so I can't test things myself. I can tell you though that the audio streaming code is completely rewritten for the upcoming version 2.2 which should completely eliminate these kinds of problems. It works by fully caching songs to the disk instead of just directly streaming them, so it's much more stable and shows you exactly how much of the song has downloaded so far. Also, I've fixed a few hidden little bugs in the audio code that can cause these random streaming errors. There was one bug that sometimes randomly would just cause the stream to pause and you had to hit the pause button then the play button to get it going again. It only happened very rarely so it was hard to pin down, but I've fixed that and a few other random rare bugs for this next version. The biggest problem on my end is that some of these bugs only happen in very particular instances (certain server setup, specific network coverage area, specific iPhones, etc) so I don't even know about them until someone reports the problem. As I continue to improve iSub, I hope to defeat (hopefully) all of these bugs as the code becomes more refined and stable and more users report problems to me.

Just a few minutes ago, another user (or possibly you m021478?) emailed me about this exact same issue. He provided me with a test account, and I was able to isolate the bug almost immediately once I had access to problematic songs. It has to do with the audio packets being larger than the max packet size I have set in my code. That is why some albums are a problem while others aren't. I had done some math to make sure that the max packet size was large enough to fit the biggest packets that an mp3 could have but only slightly bigger to have the best buffer performance. Apparently some mp3's can have packets larger than I had expected. I would have never isolated this problem without access to that test account because none of my songs cause this to happen.

I will include this fix in version 2.2 which I'm in the process of polishing up right now. Unfortunately it's too late to include it into the 2.1.1 bug fix update that I already submitted as it's being reviews by Apple as I type, but 2.2 will definitely fix this problem. It should be released in about 2 weeks. My apologies for the inconvenience.

Just submitted a bug fix update, 2.1.2, which corrects this problem. No reason to make people wait til 2.2.
